The couple made their home in rural Greene where they lived on their Century Farm until retirement in 1991. She was an active farm wife, and Melvin and Louise traveled most of the United States and enjoyed fishing in Canada. Continuing to own the farm, they then moved to their new home in Waverly in 1991, where Melvin passed away on Sept. 8, 1998.
Before moving to Waverly, Louise was an active member and volunteered at St. John's Lutheran Church (Vilmer) teaching Sunday School, Bible School, and Jr. Lutherans. In Waverly, she was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Kettner Circle, and Prayer Ministry. She volunteered in the Waverly Health Center Gift Shop and Blood Bank as an Auxiliary member. She became a member of the Garden Club, "500" card clubs, and dinner groups.
In October of 2015, Louise moved to Bartel's in Waverly. She continued to enjoy teas and Circle, playing cards, table games, solving daily newspaper crossword puzzles, and watching sports, especially the Hawkeyes. She enjoyed music, playing the organ, gardening, sewing, baking, and sharing family genealogy stories. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family and friends.
