Opal Marie "Muggs" Lynes

Opal "Muggs" Marie Lynes, 94, of Plainfield, Iowa, died Sunday, August 24, 2025, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly.

Opal was born on September 10, 1930, in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Mamie Fay (Myers) Kerdus. She graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1948. Following graduation, she worked for attorney Clarence Parker until 1954. Opal then worked for Lutheran Mutual Life/CUNA Mutual Insurance until her retirement in 1996.

On August 24, 1954, Opal was united in marriage to James William Lynes Sr. at Finchford, Iowa. The couple made their home in Plainfield, where they raised their son, James William Lynes Jr.

Opal was a longtime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. In her spare time, Opal enjoyed reading, traveling and volunteering. She volunteered at the polls and for the American Red Cross for more than 15 years, and her first love was the Plainfield Library for 20 years.

Opal is survived by her daughter-in-law, Dawn Lynes of Garnavillo, Iowa; two granddaughters, Jenny Lynes of Waterloo and Stephanie Lynes of Garnavillo; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill Sr. in 1999; her son, Jim Jr. in 2012; three brothers and their wives, Wilford and Bernice, George and Dorothy, and John and Gladys; two sisters and their husbands, Mildred and Amos Hagenson, and Dorothy and Laddis Roman; brothers-in-law, Lee (Lorraine) Chester and Wally Lynes and one sister-in-law, Norma Nolting.

Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 15, 2025, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church and School in Waverly, with a reception to follow. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or the Plainfield Library. Online condolences may be left at www.kaisercorson.com
