Richard Brooks Obituary
Dick was born on May 22, 1935, in Shell Rock, Iowa, the son of Richard K. and Lucille (Clouse) Brooks. He was raised in Shell Rock and graduated from Shell Rock High School, Class of 1953. He then went to work at the Brooks Gravel Pit in Shell Rock. Dick was drafted into the United States Army in 1958. He was stationed in the Philippines and served until 1962. Upon being honorably discharged, he returned to work at the gravel pit until 1963. Dick then went to work for Carnation (Nestle) Company in Waverly until retiring in 1997. On April 16, 1967, Dick was united in marriage to Marjorie Dettmer at Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock.
Dick was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock, V.F.W., Amvets, and the Waverly Ski and Boat Clubs. Whenever possible, you could find Dick boating, swimming and skiing with his family. Dick also enjoyed playing the trumpet and was part of the Shell Rock Swing Show from 1967 to 2019.
Dick's memory is honored by: two children, Ricky (Lori Brandau) Brooks of Johnston, Iowa, and Patti Brooks of Chicago, Illinois; two grandsons, Ben and Jack Brooks; and two brothers, Jim (Diana) Brooks of Shell Rock and Donald "Pee Wee" Brooks of Nashua. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and sister-in-law, Kathy Brooks.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 2, at Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock from 9 to 11 a.m. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 2, at Faith Lutheran Church. Following lunch at Faith Lutheran Church, burial will take place at Harlington Cemetery in Waverly, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to Faith Lutheran Church, and online condolences may be left at kaisercorson.com. 319-352-1187
