James Gilkerson Obituary

1947-2025
DAVID GILKERSON, 78, of Barboursville, WV, passed away at his residence on Wednesday, September 3, 2025. He was born June 18, 1947, a son of the late Clarence and Ella Hayton. He is also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters and his biological parents, Jim and Dorellen Frasher Gilkerson.
He was of the Protestant faith, preaching for many years, and lived a Godly life. David had coached football for many years at Fort Gay and was a huge fan of WVU football. He was a business owner and a disabled veteran, proudly serving his Country with the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, receiving the Purple Heart medal along with many others.
He is survived by his daughter, Davina (Dee) Heaberlin of Barboursville, WV; a sister, Joetta Hatfield; two grandchildren, Dr. Aaron (Victoria) Heaberlin of Morgantown, WV, and Emily (Travis) Harrison of Prichard, WV; and four grandchildren, Cora, Wiley, Andrew, and Owen. He loved his family, and his grandkids were very special to him. He is also survived by Roy Akers, a lifelong friend and cousin, who was like a brother to him.
Graveside services will be on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at the Gilkerson Family Cemetery in Prichard, WV, at 2 p.m., with Military Honors by Kenova American Legion Post 93.
