Coleen Brown Obituary

Coleen Grace Brown passed away on September 26th, 2025.

Coleen was born on March 9, 1932 at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa to George and Grace (Stafford) Hurst. She graduated from West High in 1950 and soon began working as a photographer in the Classified Dept. at the Waterloo Courier newspaper.

In 1953, Coleen married Harold E. Brown and they raised three children in Waterloo. They had a wonderful life together and traveled extensively, often sharing their adventures with their life-long friend James Giblin.

Coleen had a zest for life and was an avid duplicate bridge player who eventually attained the rank of Life Master. She began gardening later in life and devoted the same irrepressible enthusiasm to her new hobby as she had to everything she enjoyed doing during her lifetime. She especially loved roses and clematis and garden was a riot of color each summer when the many varieties of both were in bloom.

Coleen is survived by her three children, Terry (Steve) Yockey, Randal Brown and Chris (Carol) Brown, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold, father and mother George and Grace Hurst, her sister Norma Kirkland and brothers, Wesley, Donald and Richard Hurst.
