David Baier
David Baier, age 86, of Waverly, IA, beloved husband of Maureen Baier and father of Pamela (Kevin) Hartman of Waverly, Bruce (Diane) Baier of Pella, and Brett (Jane Campbell) Baier of Brentwood, TN, died Monday September 9, 2024, at his home.
David met the love of his life, Maureen Llewellyn, at the Oelwein Coliseum, but didn't go on a date until they met in a hallway at Iowa Teachers College (UNI) and she agreed to go on a date with him. David had lent his car to his cousin for his wedding unexpectedly, so picked her up in an old work truck with one seat and a crate for her to sit on! Despite this she went out again and eventually he surprised her with an engagement ring in the glovebox of his car.
David was a dedicated father, husband, and friend to many. He enjoyed when family was able to be together, and especially our yearly Mud Run. We would take the ATVs, UTVs and Motorcycles and race around the fun farm. We all thoroughly enjoyed adventures such as making it across muddy water holes and the creek and riding the trails. We would then laugh about the failures as much as the successes. Part of the adventure involved always going to the Oelwein Dairy Queen to get our Twin Cronies at for lunch.
David loved people, and especially loved talking to his friends. For most of his life he has had breakfast with his friends in Waverly, Florence, AZ, and his church friends on Sundays. He was happy to bring his kids when they visited and invited them to join in on multiple topics of conversation with the group.
David would talk honestly to folks, and they knew he was genuine, sincere, and engaged. These attributes served him well when making friends, selling a Tractor or Car, or purchasing a business or farm. Many times, people put their trust in him such as when he purchased half of an Implement business for a dollar because the owner thought he would be a good partner, and he was. Or when he wanted to purchase a farm, and he told the owner he wanted it but could not afford it. The owner asked him to pay a dollar for the downpayment. Both opportunities were a success because of his determination and ability to treat people right. He and his wife, Maureen, were able to go on multiple top seller's award trips with Massey Ferguson.
David was a Farmer! He loved farming and was very good at it. He was able to purchase farms with his number one partner in life his wife, Maureen. Farming was a family event with his kids. He had them driving tractors, picking rocks, or driving behind combines and wagons between fields. Pretty much whatever was needed. Even up until he retired from farming he was combining, and Maureen was hauling the grain to the evaluator. He once had a family reunion that included Farm Day on a small farm next to the elevator in Waverly. This day included picking the corn, dumping it into the wagon, and taking it to the elevator with the weigh in, dumping corn, then weighing again to determine the bushels of corn to be paid for. An amazing micro harvest event with everyone driving tractors and the combine.
David is leaving a legacy of love and faithfulness to his family. He richly cared for all of them in a multitude of ways. He would always ask the grandchildren, "Guess how much change is in my pocket?" Whether they were right or wrong they received the money. But the greatest gift he blessed each one with was unconditional love and forgiveness.
David is survived by his wife of 66 years, Maureen; children - Pamela (Kevin) Hartman of Waverly, Bruce (Diane) Baier of Pella, and Brett (Jane Campbell) Baier of Brentwood, TN; grandchildren – Christopher (Brandy) Hartman, Lindsay Hartman, Abigail (Andrew) Elthon, Samuel Hartman, Cassandra (Joey) Hardy, Jacob Baier, Jill (Eric) Emmert-Larson, Luke Emmert, Conner Baier, Tristan Baier; 5 Great Grandchildren; and Aileen Llewellyn
