Donald Peter Gleason, 86, of Waterloo, died Saturday, July 19, 2025, at his home in Waterloo.
He was born on May 16, 1939, in Alta Vista, Iowa, son of Leonard and Marie Gleason. He married Barbara Lee Penning on September 5, 1964, in LeRoy, Minnesota.
Don graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Elma in 1957, and worked for several years on the family farm. After they married, the Gleasons lived in Waterloo. Don started working at John Deere in 1964, and retired from Deere in 1996.
Don was an active volunteer and jack of all trades. He was always helping friends and family with household repairs and innovative fixes. Don volunteered for many years at the Knights of Columbus and the Society of St. Vincent De Paul. He loved reading, watching westerns, and spending the Winter in Arizona.
Survivors include: four children, Suzanne Gleason of Bethesda, Maryland, Donna (Mohyeddin) Kassar of Hillside, Illinois, Andrew (Michelle) Gleason of Whitestown, Indiana, and Brian (Sarah) Gleason of O'Fallon, Missouri; 12 grandchildren, Hannah Sanghvi, Jumana, Hafsa (Stephanie Sokolyk), Laila (Bryan Wang), Suha and Houmam Kassar, Alexander Hutt, Mason (Jules), Erin and Brent Gleason, and Seth and Sullivan Gleason; two great-grandchildren, Weston and Emerson Gleason; three brothers, Richard (Joanne) Gleason of Gilbertville, Jim Gleason of Gilbertville, and Gerald (Betty) Gleason of Waterloo; and one sister, Mary Crowe of Waterloo.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Lee Gleason, and his parents.
Don was entombed in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Waterloo. The memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2025, at 11:30 a.m., at St. Edwards Catholic Church. The visitation will be held an hour prior to the service. Hagarty Waychoff Grarup Funeral Service is assisting the family.
