WATERLOO - James J. Sweeney Jr., 87, of Waterloo, died Sunday, May 5, at his home.
He was born March 3, 1937, in Elma, the son of James Sr. and Grace Tierney Sweeney. He married Joyce Ollendieck on September 18, 1956, in Cresco.
Jim was employed with Rath Packing Company and then with John Deere until his retirement in 1997. He was a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, where he demonstrated significant leadership within the Council and the community at large. He also managed the bar at the Knights of Columbus Hall.
James loved spending time with his beautiful wife Joyce through 67 years of marriage. And he loved his special visits with his children, grandchildren and extended family where they would reminence and create new memories.
Survivors include: his wife, Joyce of Waterloo; his children, Kathy (Dave) Hoth of Waterloo, Janet Sweeney Swanson of Apple Valley, MN, Bruce (Wendy) Sweeney of Waterloo, and Scott Sweeney (Hamdi Binbrek) of Princeton, NJ and New York City; ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren; his sisters, Sherry (Rolph) Zeigler of Tucson, AZ and Sue (Julius) Griffith of San Jose, CA; his beloved puppy, Bandit.
Preceded in the death by: his parents; his daughter, Glenda Connor; his sisters, Mary Morris and Darlene Livingston; his brother, Joe Sweeney.
There will be a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Rosary at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9, followed by visitation from 4 -7 p.m. at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 10, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with entombment in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery Mausoleum. Visitation also one hour prior to the Mass on Friday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to the family for an organization to be determined.

My most sincere sympathies go out to the Sweeney Family. Jim was a great neighborhood dad that took the time to talk to us kids and listen to what we had to say. I had a great neighborhood when I was a kid and Jim was a member that helped make it that way.
