Larry Dwight Walters
July 31, 1943-March 12, 2024
Larry Walters, age 80, of Waterloo, Iowa, passed peacefully away March 12, 2024 surrounded by family at St. Luke's Skilled Nursing in Carthage, Missouri.
He was born in Waterloo, Iowa to Henry Merlin and LaVonne Cora (Olson) Walters. He graduated from East High school in Waterloo. He attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa before joining the Army in 1967 and serving in Viet Nam. He was employed by the Air National Guard as a helicopter mechanic for 36 years. He retired as a Master Sergeant in 2003.
He married Lola Jane (Davis) Flannery on October 7, 1989, in Lorimor, Iowa. He was an active member of the Mount Hope Methodist Church, Waterloo, IA.
Larry is survived by his wife, Jane, daughter Tonia (Forrest Green) Walters of Cedar Rapids, daughter Christy Judd of Joplin, MO, son Darrell (Rhonda) Flannery of Nixa, MO, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Christina (Steward) Ackerman of Noblesville, IN, two nephews, Eric (Melissa) Ackerman of Carmel, IN, Kurt Ackerman of Zionsville, IN and his Aunt Beverly Walters of Yorktown, VA.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Black Hawk County Veterans Affairs (1407 Independence Ave., Waterloo, IA 50703) would be greatly appreciated.
Celebration of Life will be Saturday, May 4th at Am Vets Post 49 in Cedar Falls from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., with a fly-over at 2:30 p.m.
Graveside services will be at the Iowa Veteran's Cemetery in Van Meter, IA at 2:00 p.m. Exit 113.

I worked with Larry on veteran's things that go back over a 3 decades. We were both charter members of the Cedar Falls VFW. This photo shows us working on the Vietnam Exhibit at Grout Museum in 2015--2016. I am in the front center. Steve Wikert
