Mary Ann Smith, 84, of Waterloo, died in her home on October 15, 2025, of natural causes surrounded by her husband and children.

Visitation will be held Sunday, October 19, from 2pm to 4pm at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway and the funeral service on Monday, October 20, at 10 am at St. Edward Catholic Church in Waterloo, with burial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

She was born March 11, 1941, in Waterloo to William Howard Beverstock and Beatrice Driscoll. She attended St. Edward grade school, West High School, and earned her LPN from Hawkeye.

She worked as a nurse at Schoitz Hospital for more than a decade and then stayed home to raise her children until 1989 when she returned to nursing at Ravenwood Specialty Care Center. She retired from nursing in 2002.

In 1972, she married Dean Smith at St. Edward Church where she was a life long member and they were married for nearly 53 years. They had two children whom she loved dearly and supported passionately; she attended their events and celebrated their successes. Her grandsons were the loves of her life. She loved baking Christmas cookies, coloring Easter eggs, and playing board games with them. They knew if they stopped by Grandma's anytime that she would always have cookies and a good story waiting.

Extended family was also very important to Mary Ann and she always looked forward to the Smith family Thanksgiving where everybody found the time to connect in person.

She had a wealth of friends who were like family - most of whom were in her life for 40 years or longer.

She is survived by her husband, Dean; her children, Julie, Michael (Amie) of Waterloo; her grandsons, Calvin and Luke of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.
