Savannah Carolyn-Rayne Holmes
April 4, 2018-May 16, 2022
ANKENY-Savannah Carolyn-Rayne Holmes, 4, of Ankeny, passed away Monday, May 16, 2022, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines as the result of an accident.
She was born on April 4, 2018, in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Akeem Holmes and Leah Clark.
Savannah was a bright and shining light. Her personality was big and bold, ranging from silly and sassy to fierce protector of her family. She was a girly-girl who loved to dress up, get her hair done, and looked forward to regular mani/pedi appointments with her mom.
She was inquisitive and extremely smart and was known to make a statement. The beach was her favorite place, and on a whim, she would decide it's time for a beach day.
Savannah, even at such a young age, knew the meaning of love and how to show it through her actions, giving the best hugs and kisses.
Those left to cherish fond memories are her parents, Leah Clark and Akeem Holmes of Ankeny; sister, Treionna Clark; two brothers, Jayden Williams and Asir Holmes; maternal grandparents, Glenn (Gayle) Clark and Rae Bruns all of Waterloo; paternal grandparents, Cornell Owens and Teresa Holmes of Charleston, South Carolina; and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.
Preceded in death by her maternal and paternal great-grandparents.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
Celebration of Life Services: 11:00 am on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 at Locke at Tower Park in Waterloo.

I came across Savannah's tribute because I have a Google auto search that pulls anything that contains the words "the meaning of love" which is a phrase you used to describe your precious angel. My husband and I lost our son, Nick, in 2014 when he was 20. His death was caused by a bolt of lightning that struck him while he was in the water at the beach. I read how Savannah loved the beach. About 5 weeks after Nick's passing, we found an essay on his computer that he wrote for a college English class. The essay was titled "The Reality of Heaven." In his essay Nick wrote about all the views that different faiths, and those who don't have faith, have about what happens when someone dies. At the end of the essay Nick concluded, "When I die I expect to feel joy, gratitude, and excitement because I will be finally reunited with the loved ones I have lost on earth...I don't know why they say 'rest in peace' when people die. Perhaps a phrase such as 'thrive in joy' best represents how I want to spend eternity." While I know there are no words that can bring comfort at this time, I hope you can imagine Savannah's beautiful smile as she tells her grandparents that it's time for a beach day in paradise and together they join you in spirit every time you go to the beach in Savannah's memory. We started a foundation www.thrivinjoy.org in Nick's memory and will gratefully make a personal donation today in Savannah's memory.
