David Sherrer Obituary

Jeffcoat Funeral Home 255 Friendship Road Tallassee, AL 36078 Tel (334) 283-6801 Mr. David Morrell Sherrer, a resident of Tallassee, Alabama, passed away Sunday, January 12, 2025, at the age of 92. He was born July 26, 1932, in Alabama, to David J. and Eunice M. Fannin Sherrer. Mr. Sherrer is survived by his daughter, Gennie Boles and grandson, John Paul Boles. He is preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Sherrer and parents, David and Eunice Sherrer. Morrell served at ACTS in Tallassee for seventeen years. Not only did he work during operation hours but worked many days and hours when ACTS was closed for the day, putting in 12-15 hours a week, at least. He sorted food, clothes and furniture, etc. He has painted part of the building, cleaned shelves and did whatever needed to be done. He cleaned the hall floor so the recipients would feel more at ease and respected. He did things that others didn't know needed to be done. He went beyond "duty" to help the needy outside of ACTS. He made them feel respected and at ease. People called him after hours for help and he met their needs. He gave out clothes, food, furniture and helped pay their utilities. He trained new volunteers and was always ready with a helping hand. Morrell was always ready to help people who called him at home. He cut grass for disabled people who couldn't afford to pay him. He gave his extra mower to a neighbor who couldn't afford to buy one. Morrell and Geneva were married for 68 years. At 92 years old, he was still doing work for people without charging them. He kept his house and yards kept up and was a blessing to his community. He was always a good husband, dad and provider to his family. He was a member of East Tallassee Baptist Church for forty years and was an active deacon and on many committees. He did work on the church building, fixed ceilings, painted, cleaned floors and served on special occasions such as Wednesday night suppers, Homecoming and helping with the food arrangements for funerals and clean-up afterwards. After completing high school, he served in the U.S. Army from April 1953-1955. He worked in Textile for thirty five and one-half years and at AMSCO for ten years. He retired in 1995, then worked for H. Cannon paving parking lots and driveways for another three years. Morrell was a member of RSVP for almost seventeen years. He received 5 year, 10 year and 15 year member awards for RSVP Volunteers for serving Elmore and Tallapoosa counties. In 2006 Morrell received the President's Call to Service Award, presented by the Presidents Council on Service and Civic Participation. He also received a letter of congratulations from President George Bush for receiving the award. The family will receive friends Friday, January 17, 2025, from 2:00PM until service time at 3:00PM at East Tallassee Baptist Church, Rev. Brandon Fomby officiating. Burial will follow in Carrville Cemetery.
