Nearly 60 years ago a young boy received a kind gesture of support from a caring woman that would have a lasting impression over a lifetime. That young boy would be me, and the caring woman, my cousin Sharon. I found myself in a situation where my actions caused grief and major concern potentially impacting members of our family. The cause was highly technical
equipment, and the affect, how it triggered my curiosity for how it all operated. I fell victim to my curiosity and it did me in. I was asked over and over again by parental adults why I did what I did, but my answer was always the same and always unacceptable, I don´t know. The guilt I felt was horrible and I was very scared for what I had done, not really understanding the consequences of this traumatic event. Adult figures were either angry or silent, except for the
one person who came to my rescue with kindness, understanding, and compassion. That was Sharon and she stepped up all alone trying to explain to adults why I did what I did and was not the careless and disobedient kid I was being made out to be. There was a rational explanation for the behavior and it took a young woman to point it out. Sharon was smart beyond her
years. Her intervention helped from what could have been a scaring episode of my life. Years later as an adult I thanked Sharon for what she did and let her know the impact it had on me. It is funny the things we remember that happen during early stages of our lives and what stands out years later. I will never forget what Sharon did for me so very, very long ago.
