Gabrielle Levinson Obituary

Gabrielle Levinson
December 16, 1935 - September 14, 2023
Gabrielle Levinson was born in Breslau, Germany in 1935 to Dr. Frederick and Edith Wachsner. In 1939, at the age of three, she and her parents fled Nazi Germany, settling in Manhattan. Gaby was an excellent student and entered Duke University at the age of 16. After graduating, she worked in a variety of roles, including as Research Assistant to Edward R. Murrow, the famous broadcast journalist at CBS.
She met her husband Arne when they were both on separate ski trips to Mount Snow in Vermont. She first saw him when she opened his room door by accident, seeing him in his thermal underwear. It was love at first sight. They were married in 1962 in New York City.
Gaby continued to work at CBS and then left when her son Eric was born, and they moved to Westport, CT. Her daughter Alisa soon followed. Gaby raised her children while also holding voluntary roles, such as leader for their Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops, and President of the Congregation for Humanistic Judaism in Westport.
In 1980 Gaby returned to the workforce. She had always been an excellent writer and she went to work as the assistant editor for Olin Corporation's company newspaper in Stamford, CT.
After Gaby and her husband Arne retired, they rented an apartment in Pompano Beach, Florida for a few weeks each winter. Gaby loved and enjoyed her three grandchildren--Sofia, Adam, and Jake-and was very proud of them. Gaby took care of Arne until his death in 2018, and she lived independently in their Westport townhome since that time.
Gaby loved playing tennis and bridge with her girlfriends, travel, was an avid reader, and loved the arts, including museums, plays, and concerts. She loved reading her New York Times each day, watching PBS, 60 Minutes, and tennis, and later in life, Jeopardy!
Gaby was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Arne. She is survived by her son Eric Levinson and his wife Celita, and their daughter Sofia; her daughter Alisa Sheriff and her husband Chuck and their sons Adam and Jake; her stepson Mark; and her sister-in-law and brother-in-law JoAnn and Charles Srebnik and their children Aimee, Lee, Allison, Michelle, and Andrew.
Funeral services were private.

Gabrielle was a great woman and person. I met her during my time at Olin Corporation in the PR department. Those were good times and people I will never forget. Cheryl Vyfhuis
