Lance Graber Obituary

Lance J. Graber
Lance J. Graber, 61, beloved husband of Pam Graber, died from complications related to brain cancer on November 5, 2022, at their home in Scottsdale, AZ, surrounded by his loved ones.
Lance was born in West Hempstead, NY, the son of Raymond and Eileen Graber. He graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he received bachelor's and master's degrees. He had a long and successful career in real estate finance. Most recently, he served as a founder and principal at Front Range Capital, a real estate private equity firm he co-founded in 2010, which now has over $2 billion in assets under management. Lance devoted his free time to his children, Devin and Lindsey, coaching them in youth sports and being the loudest fan at every Staples High School sports game.
In addition to being a doting husband and father, Lance was a beloved son, sibling, uncle, role model, and friend. He displayed a love for life and determination to live it to its fullest, whether by going to metal concerts with his son, exploring Golden Gai in Japan with his daughter, or traveling to Vietnam with his wife. Lance consistently strived to be his best, always exploring new hobbies like skiing in his 30s or running over a thousand miles in a single year. He golfed and was a devoted member alongside Pam at both the Patterson and Estancia Golf Clubs.
He is survived by his wife, Pam Graber; their children, Lindsey and Devin Graber; daughter-in-law, Kait Graber; brothers, Doug and Ray Graber (sp. Carol Graber); sister, Nancy Graber; and brother-in-law, Mark Walsh. He is also survived by his loving in-laws, Tom and Alma Walsh; as well as nephews and nieces whom he adored.
There will be a service to honor him on Friday at 12:00pm at St. Luke's Church. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Lance's name to the Mayo Clinic, where he received his cancer treatments ( https://philanthropy.Mayo clinic.org ).

I just learned of the sad news of Lance´s passing through The Pennsylvania Gazette so please excuse my late condolences. I was a teammate on the Penn football team and a Sigma Nu brother of Lance. His love for living life to the fullest was only equaled by his profound intelligence. I remember once when Lance told me he had to study for finance final and was way behind because, and I quote "I haven´t looked at the book yet". He proceeded to put a Who album on full blast and begin his all night study session. Yes, he received an "A". He was a special person who touched many lives in a positive fashion- my deepest sympathies to his family and many friends.

My condolences to Lance´s family and friends. I played football at Penn with Lance and attended every Sigma Nu party even after I went to work on Wall St. Lance was funny and pretended he was a slacker but was really smart and hard working. I´m sure he left an amazing legacy.

My deepest condolences for your loss.

I knew Lance by being on the other side of the negotiating table when we were buying properties that he was selling for Aimco. He was a tough but fair negotiator for sure, always working to get the best outcome for the company. He would demand to see my proforma and go through it line by line, explaining why our assumptions should be more aggressive and thus enable us to pay him more for the property. He was rarely wrong.

I also happen to live in Westport and in the evening I would often text my wife what train I was on from the city and what time I would be home. The first two letters of her name are "Gr" and sometimes I would hastily text Lance by mistake given the first two letters of his last name. He always had a funny response like "dinner will be waiting" or "don't forget the wine." We would have a good laugh when I would see him at an event or across the negotiating table.

He will be sorely missed.

Pam,Devin and Lindsay;
Very sorry for your loss. The world was better with Lance in it. We never know the hour the Lord will take us but I bet you he´s talking to Saint Peter right now and he saying that unless I got three bars on my phone and there´s a Dunkin´ Donuts close we´re not interested in buying. He was my boss for many years at AIMCO And was a true mentor. He will be in our prayers

Lance was my first boss out of college at CSFB, and when he interviewed me all he asked was who owned Smoke's, the popular bar at Penn. Thank god I knew the answer!

One day he asked me what I was doing and I said working and he asked if I wanted to go to Hawaii. Our group was buying the Grand Wailea hotel in Maui and he needed signed documents to be delivered by the next day, but Fedex would take 2 days. I flew to Hawaii, handed the papers to the title agent in the airport, she put a lei over my head, and I walked back to the gate to fly back.

Many times I remember Lance working all day without stopping for lunch, and he would still be there working with us until midnight. I think he survived on Good & Plenty's from the vending machine.

Lance could review a foot high stack of loan documents overnight, while watching a WWF fight and also let you know the Rangers and Jets scores in the morning. Sometimes he had so many edits and corrections the lawyers felt like they should be paying him. But not really. I think they were mostly annoyed that he was also a better lawyer than them.

When I moved to D.C. he hired me to work for him at AIMCO, which was a lifesaver because I was already moving and didn't have a job yet. He sat in the room with his boss at the time for my interview and when his boss gave me the offer, I happily accepted on the spot. Lance retorted, "Nice negotiating dummy!"

There are so many more hilarious memories I have of Lance, these are just the first that came to mind. He had such a positive impact on me just as with everyone who had the good fortune to know him. There are no superlatives to do him justice, so I will simply say that I am very sad today and that Lance was one of a kind.

Dear Pam, Devin and Lindsey,

We are devastated to hear about Lance. It has been a long time since we have seen you all, yet, our sweet memories with your family seem like they were yesterday. Our memories of watching the boys play sports and hearing your husband's ever booming words of encouragement to the kids come flooding back to me. Please know that we are all thinking of you at the incredibly difficult time.

With love from former Westport-ers,
Karen, Mark, Jordan and Charlotte
