Malcolm Davies
Malcolm Davies passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on Saturday, November 1, at his home in St. Mary's by the Sea in Bridgeport, CT. He was in the nurturing company of his beloved wife, Francesca, and their two children, Talitha of Los Angeles and Matthew of Asharoken, NY.
Malcolm was born on June 6, 1937, in Neath, Wales, to Winifred Doris Parry, a milliner, and Cyril Owen Davies, a senior steam locomotive engineer for the Great Western Railway. As a young boy, he witnessed the atrocities of World War II, watching from his family home, looking down across the Neath Valley at aerial assaults on the Swansea oil refinery, a strategic target for Germany's nighttime bombing raids.
Malcolm attended grammar school in Neath. After high school, he declined a prestigious accounting job at the Steel Company of Wales and instead secured a full scholarship to the London School of Economics at age 17. He was the first in his family to leave for the big city and go to university.
While in London, he met Francesca Honorine Mauricette Mattei, a student at the London Trinity College of Music. In 1965, they were married at the Church of the Holy Redeemer in Cheyne Row, then boarded a horse-drawn carriage together down Chelsea's King's Road; a glorious day and union he was immensely proud of until his last breath.
After working successfully for several London firms, including the British Aircraft Corporation, Malcolm was hired by Manufacturers Hanover Trust, where he became an expert in the complex field of global trade finance. He went on to become the President of Manufacturers Hanover's World Trade Corporation in New York City, necessitating a move to the USA, where he settled with his family in Westport, Connecticut.
An avid kayaker and outdoorsman in retirement, he found an energetic coterie of friends in the Westport Y's Men group, with whom - in addition to teaching them an appreciation for the Wales rugby team - he hiked, debated, cooked, traveled, and celebrated.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Francesca; son, Matthew Davies, and daughter-in-law, Lucy; daughter, Talitha Davies Wegner; grandchildren, Severn, Larkyn, and Keiland Davies; sister, Jillian Adams, and her husband, Stephen Millett; and many cherished nephews and nieces. His favorite son-in-law, William Wegner, passed away unexpectedly in 2021.
Malcolm's love of his Welsh heritage, politics, fierce debate, literature, and art fostered a strong family culture, one which will, in the course of time, aid in coping with the unwelcome silence wrought by his enormous absence.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, November 23, 2025, at Lesko Funeral Home, 1209 Post Rd., Fairfield, CT, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please, if you are able, seek a trail through woods, or fields, or sandy shores to walk on and breathe; commune with the beauty of nature in Malcolm's memory.
