Alfredo E. Martinez

Alfredo E. "Fred" Martinez, 80, of rural Columbia City, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, July 13, 2025. Born on March 11, 1945 in Eagle Pass, Texas, he was a son of the late Rafael and Julia (Escaleta) Martinez. Growing up in Texas, he completed his formal education at New Braunfels High School. Moving to the Fort Wayne area, he worked for General Electric and then became an autobody man for Thomson's Whitley County Motor Sales for over 18 years. On March 11, 2000, he married Dawn J. Swing. They have always made their home in rural Columbia City. An exceptional auto body man, he earned an enviable reputation for his high-quality work and painting skills. When he was not fixing cars, he enjoyed racing them, owning a prized Oldsmobile 442 drag car. He loved to be with family and friends, sharing good food, good drink, and lots of laughs. He enjoyed fishing and playing golf at the local courses. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Dawn; children, Rafael (Crystal) Martinez of Columbia City, Alfredo Martinez, Jr. of Florida and Lynette Martinez of Louisiana; grandchildren, Matthew, Julia and Alex; a great-grandson, Deegan; and brothers, Raul (Gloria) Martinez, Joe (Mary) Martinez, Jesse Martinez, and Carlos Martinez. Additionally, he was preceded in death by a sister, Maria L. Perez. The funeral service is at 3 p.m. Tuesday (July 22nd) at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Burial is at the Nolt Cemetery.
