Mary Hornak Obituary

Mary Pauline Hornak, age 93, of Fort Wayne, IN, passed August 4, 2025 at the Towne House Retirement Community. She was gloriously welcomed into the open arms of our Lord, Jesus Christ, as she peacefully slept on Monday evening, surrounded by her loving children. Born on May 19, 1932, in Chatfield, MN, Mary was the daughter of the late Paul and Marie (Butler) Lynch. She earned her Bachelor's degree from Winona State University and her Master's from Indiana University. Mary started the kindergarten program at St. Jude's Catholic School in Fort Wayne, where she taught for 26 years. On June 18, 1955, Mary married the love of her life, James "Jim" A. Hornak. They shared 58 wonderful years together raising five children, as they shared and enjoyed the best things in life. Mary treasured time with her family and friends. She was active in her Book Club, Bible Study Group, Educator's Sorority and the Ski Club, which she and Jim were involved in for many years. Mary loved cooking, reading, traveling, and music-singing beautifully from a young age and playing piano. She was also a gifted poet. Mary is survived by her children, Timothy (Clemencia) Hornak, Julie (James) Tarpey, Daniel Hornak, Kathryn (Kevin) Meeks, and Maureen Hornak; grandchildren, Megan, Pauline, Hannah, and Lucas; and sister, Dody Stoy. She was preceded in death by her husband, James; her parents; and her brother, Patrick Lynch. Mary's warmth, kindness, and vibrant spirit touched everyone she met. She had a gift for making others feel seen, valued, and loved. Mary's grace and love will live in the hearts of all who knew her. I was so fortunate to have had Mary as a teacher for all four of my children! I loved being a room mother as she always was so easy to please and appreciative. As a teacher she was kind and nurturing and always had control of her class.
I would often describe her to others as the face in the dictionary under KINDERGARTEN TEACHER! My love and sympathy to her family. She will truly be missed!

Mrs. Hornak will always have a special place in my heart! She was my teacher 36 years ago and every Christmas, I still hang an ornament she made for me that year on my Christmas tree with a tag stating it was from her. St Jude's was so very lucky to have her! Rest in peace, Mrs. Hornak.
