Dorothy B. Marks-Newberry, 91, of Allentown, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully surrounded by her family December 29, 2024.
Born in Allentown, Dorothy was the loving and devoted wife of D.E. (Bob) Newberry, Jr., for 29 years before he passed away in 2013. She was the daughter of the late Anthony G. and Mary R. (Cherney) Friend.
Dorothy was the youngest and last surviving sibling of George, Robert, Charles, Paul, Marie, and Theresa.
A graduate of Central Catholic High School, she retired from the Lehigh Valley Dairy and worked at Kmart before founding D's Limousine Service with her husband, Bob Newberry.
With no prior business experience, the pair worked tirelessly, learned about business, and answered phone calls 24 hours a day. While Bob focused on driving, logistics, and strategic planning, Dorothy handled all the office duties, including, but not limited to reservations, payables and receivables, payroll, and scheduling.
But she did not just stay in the office. She also cleaned and fueled vehicles at all hours, and she even put on the "chauffeur's cap" on occasion. She really enjoyed "stewardess" duties serving drinks and snacks to bus passengers as Bob drove them to casinos or other exciting destinations.
Together, Dorothy and Bob started their business by transporting small packages with a Volkswagen Rabbit. They pivoted to executive transportation when they realized there was a need for a sedan service, as executives did not need or want to ride in ostentatious stretch limousines. They eventually had the largest corporate sedan service in the area that served both the corporate and private sectors of the Lehigh Valley with sedans, vans, stretch limousines, and 46-passenger motor coaches for 15 years before it was sold.
Never content to sit at home in retirement, they would often "get out of the house" by spontaneously driving to places like Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, and Missouri to visit friends and family, check out casinos, or enjoy country and western shows.
While Bob sometimes rolled the dice at the casinos, she fed the slot machines, and Wheel of Fortune was her longtime favorite. But when that machine stopped appearing in casinos, well, any port in a storm!
Before departing for the next road trip (or work trip, or grocery trip, or lunch trip, or post office trip, etc.) she always needed to swing by Werley's Store to grab a TAB soda and a straw. Always! As a matter of fact, TAB has not been manufactured since 2020 when Dorothy stopped driving. Coincidence? Hmmm
Always conscious of her diet, she avoided sugar and cholesterol. She treated herself to Eggs Benedict every few weeks, and she ordered a cup of decaffeinated coffee with skim milk after every restaurant meal, without fail. No restaurant had skim milk, but that did not keep her from asking - every time!
She read somewhere (probably the Globe or Examiner trash papers) that a glass of red wine from Chile was good for the heart. Well, she took that advice to heart and ran with it.
Her grandson Zachary introduced her to the Impossible Whopper (no mayo, extra onion) from Burger King, and she ate them every chance she got. And she just loved Yocco's Hot Dogs (Classic, extra onion) dabbed on a napkin first to absorb the grease - healthier that way!
Dorothy also loved real dogs, particularly Springer Spaniels, and she owned several throughout her life. She even worked at a veterinary clinic in retirement.
Earlier in life, Dorothy found great joy in spending summers on Martha's Vineyard and fishing alongside her late husband, Paul Marks, who passed away in 1982. Together, they created memories filled with love and laughter by the sea.
A lifelong member of the St. John the Baptist Slovak Catholic Church, Dorothy continued to attend services every week until very late in life.
She is survived by her stepson Donald Newberry, his wife Krystyna, and their son Zachary. She is also survived by her stepson Robert Marks, his wife Jill, and their sons Nathaniel and Gordon, and stepdaughter Brenda Marks Fuller, her husband Don Fuller, and their son Jason.
Dorothy is also survived by nieces and nephews Charles Friend Jr., John Pruzinsky, Thomas Pruzinsky, Michael Pruzinsky, Nancy Geletkanych, Constance Purcell (goddaughter), Kathleen Reither, Lisa Capece, and Robyn Colajezzi, and by her former brother-in-law, John Pruzinsky, Sr. She was predeceased by nephews George Fraind, Jr. and Dennis Friend.

A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:45 AM at St. John the Baptist Slovak Church, 924 N. Front St, Allentown with the interment at Jordan Lutheran Church Cemetery in Orefield.
