Douglas Hilyard Obituary

Douglas B. Hilyard, 78, of East Stroudsburg, passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2025. Born on May 26, 1946 to the late William M. and Alice (Phillips) Hilyard in East Stroudsburg, he was a lifelong resident of Monroe County. He graduated from East Stroudsburg High School in 1964 where he was named Scholar Athlete and earned eight varsity letters. He was honored in the National High School Football Hall of Fame and the East Stroudsburg High School Wall of Fame. He graduated from Rutgers University in 1968 with a B.A. in sociology. He started his career at First Pennsylvania Bank in Philadelphia, before returning home to work as an officer with the East Stroudsburg National Bank, where he met his loving wife of 47 years, Dorothy A. (Singer) Hilyard. He later worked for Jordan Surgical Associates, Prudential Insurance, and as an independent agent. In his earlier years he was involved in leagues for bowling, pool, darts, softball, and especially golf. He made 40 golf trips to Myrtle Beach with the same Stroudsburg group. He was a member of the Elks, Moose, Knights of Malta, C.L.U., and Eagles clubs. He coached Little League and was an avid Cincinnati Reds fan. Doug was a lifetime member of Zion United Church of Christ where he served on Consistory, was an usher, greeter, lay reader, and Captain of the communion service. In addition to his loving wife Dorothy, he is survived by his son Douglas W. Hilyard (Tessa) of Hanover and daughter Gretchen Hilyard Boyce (Chris) of Colfax, CA. He was the proud Papaw of Ryan and Mallory Hilyard. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Charles "Chuck" Torpy of Virginia; sister-in-law Sheila Silver of Florida and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his only sibling, Carole Hilyard Torpy. Friends and relatives will be received from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, March 13, at the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg. The funeral service will be held at Zion United Church of Christ, 14 North 8th Street, Stroudsburg at 11:00am on Friday, March 14th officiated by Pastor Gary M. Barraco. Burial will follow in Laurelwood Cemetery, Stroudsburg. The family asks in lieu of flowers to make donations in his memory to the Zion United Church of Christ, 14 North 8th Street, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.
