Douglas Johansen Obituary
Douglas Eliot Johansen, 76, of Forks Township passed away surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, May 22, 2025. He was born on September 6, 1948 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late Roy Walter and Martha Rossamond (MacLean) Johansen.
He graduated from Freehold High School and earned his Bachelor's Degree in civil engineering from Newark College of Engineering. He was the project executive for Crowe, Westfield Corp., and many others. Highlights of his career included the VA Hospital addition/expansion in NYC, the Easton Hospital Expansion, the Connecticut Post Mall expansion, and construction of the monorail at Newark Airport.
Doug had a deep love for travel, always wanting to explore new places to enjoy the landscapes and history that each country had to offer. The highlights of his travels were exploring his ancestral roots in Ireland and Norway and his wife's roots in Italy. He loved taking his family on vacations to Walt Disney World, and instilled that love of magic onto his children and grandchildren with their numerous trips. In his desire to give his family unique experiences, they even traveled to 2 Summer Olympics - Los Angeles in 1984 and Atlanta in 1996.
Doug enjoyed a good round of poker with friends, playing games on his computer, and completing challenging jigsaw puzzles. He was an avid golfer and played any chance he got. He loved cheering (and sometimes jeering) for his favorite sports teams, the NY Mets and The NY Giants.
He was a very involved father and grandfather. He took pride in always being there for every important event and celebration for his daughters and grandsons. He coached both soccer and softball for all three of his daughters in elementary school. In his later years, you could find him on the sidelines at his grandsons' games. It was a goal in his life to instill the importance of family and quality time together.
Doug is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Toni Ann (Fili) Johansen; daughters, Nicole Cramer and her husband, Tom; Lauren Sulovski; Elyse Johansen-Smith and her husband, Brian; sisters, Sandra Gerardis and her husband, Ray; Randi Johansen; grandchildren, Jacob and Matthew Cramer, Joey Sulovski, and Logan and Parker Smith.
