Eleanor Read Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Eleanor on June 13, 2025. She was born in Germantown, Pa. to David and Mary Rittenhouse.
As a young child, Eleanor was given the nickname "Pokey" by her father because she was always the last one to the supper table. The name stuck with her and throughout her life, she was known as Pokey to most of her family and friends.
She loved to sing and growing up, that gift was nurtured by her mother who sang in their church choir at St. James the Less in Philadelphia. Wherever she lived, Eleanor joined the church choir, culminating in the choir at Warminster Presbyterian Church right here in Warminster. With her gift of caring and serving others, Eleanor also became a deacon at Warminster Presbyterian.
Eleanor enjoyed singing with the Bucks Mont Chapter of Sweet Adelines for many years, sharing that experience with her daughter, Carol. At Ann's Choice, she was also an active member of the chorus for a number of years. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, needlework and gardening as well as various other crafts.
The story goes that she met the love of her life, Bob, while on the daily trolley ride to work and the rest is history. They were married on October 8, 1950 and spent 64 years together loving one another. Eleanor is survived by their 3 children, Betsy, Carol and David and two grandchildren, Daisy and Kazen and her much loved daughter in law, Prescila.
Eleanor was very proud of her family history, being related to the Rittenhouse family of Philadelphia as well as the family of Presidents John Adams and his son, John Quincy Adams. Much of the family history was shown by the pictures that hung on the walls of their home, reflecting that pride.
Though the walls were filled with family history, old and new, most of all, it was a home filled with love of family and friends. Eleanor had a way of making everyone feel welcome and always thought of others first before herself. For her daughters especially, living so far away, coming home was like being enveloped by a hug, warm and welcoming.
Relatives and friends are invited to join us and attend a Celebration of Life at the Ann's Choice Chapel on July 12th. There will be a receiving line beginning at 1:30pm followed by the Celebration at 2:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be directed to the Ann's Choice Benevolent Fund.
