I worked for Gene for over 20 years yet sitting down to write this message it occured to me that I could have chosen friend or work while checking the box for how I know Gene. In fact I could almost feel entitled to check family. Anyone who worked for Gene for a good length of time would feel the same. Our office was like a family with Gene being both the dad and the funny uncle. He could tell a story that was so funny I had trouble catching my breath from laughing so hard, but when I went home to share it with my husband and kids it never came out so funny. He told each story perfectly so that even when I was present at a gathering hearing about the same funny incident for the second (or more) time, I still had to laugh just as hard.
He wasn't just funny. He was also a kind boss. He hired me knowing that I had 5 kids which would have given plenty of employers pause. When my mother was ill near the end of her life Gene let me work from home one week a month so that I could bring my mother home with me for a week. It is because of his kindness in that situation that I can look back and know I did right by my mother. I
As much as Gene loved his work family it was clear that he loved his real family much more. Gene and Natalie drove me to a customers funeral one evening. It was a long drive and as we drove Gene and Natalie told me their origin story. It was clear as each of them told parts of the story that they still loved each other just as much as they had in the beginning. It was inspiring to hear it, and it gave me a very warm feeling for them both that stayed with me always after that. Gene always drove as if he was already an hour late and sometimes it was a while knuckle drive for me, but that time I was so engrossed in the story I didn't even notice it.
I know his family will miss him but I hope they are comforted by that love he so obviously had for them.

We are saddened by Gene´s passing. Gene was always welcoming and had a big smile that just spread happiness to those around him. We enjoyed many Christmas Eve open houses with Gene & Natalie where good friends and family and food were plentiful. Gene will be missed, and our deepest condolences to dearest Natalie, and family. Love you all, Bunny & Bob, NC
