Eugene Matz Obituary

Eugene Paul Matz, 78, beloved father, of Pottstown, PA, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2025, at Pottstown Hospital. Born in Barnesville, PA, on November 23, 1946, Eugene was the son of the late Arlington Eugene Matz and Martha Winifred (Derrick) Matz. Eugene graduated from Pottsgrove High School in 1965 and proudly served his country in both the United States Navy and the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. He began his military journey in 1966 with the Navy, serving as an Electrician's Mate Third Class aboard the USS Grand Canyon, and was honorably discharged in 1971. He later continued his service in the Army National Guard, where he served as a medical specialist and recruiter with the 103rd Medical Battalion in Pottstown. He was awarded the National Guard Recruiter Badge and the Marksmanship Badge for rifle proficiency, and was honorably discharged from the Guard in 1978, completing over a decade of combined military service with dedication and pride. Known for his strong work ethic and independent spirit, Eugene brought determination to everything he did. In retirement, he found joy in life's simple pleasures-taking day trips and train rides, tending to his garden, playing cards with Dale and Jimmy, and cherishing time spent with family and friends. Eugene is survived by his daughter, Colleen Matz; his brother, Dale Matz; his niece, Michelle (Michael) Harris; his grandnephew, Nate Harris; and his cousin, Jimmy Houck. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sons, Rich and Mike Matz. Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Houck & Gofus Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 955 N. Charlotte St., Pottstown, PA 19464, is entrusted with the arrangements. Condolences may be shared at www.houckgofusfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Eugene's memory to the ASPCA or a charity of your choice.
