Georgia Bodle Obituary
Georgia Rice Bodle, 86, passed away in her sleep on Friday, April 25, 2025 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Wendell Phillips and Evelyn Goldsmith Rice. Georgia loved and took pride in her New York City upbringing, often sharing fond memories of navigating city streets and summering on Long Island. She graduated from Riverdale Country School in 1956 and earned a joint degree in Chemistry and Mathematics from Bucknell University in 1960. Georgia then embarked on a successful 40-year career as a senior software engineer at Univac/Unisys, where she also met her beloved husband of 59 years, John Bodle. Together, they settled in Norristown, Pennsylvania, and raised their two children, Gaby and Jeff.
Georgia was a devoted mother, always encouraging her children to embrace life, always be curious and to pursue their passions whether in sports, academics, camps, scouts or travel. She spent many joyful hours at Germantown Academy cheering and supporting her kids. During their time with the Norristown swim team, she managed the team's statistics, worked at the swim meet scoring table, and used her programming skills to create a scoring program for the team.
Georgia loved to learn. Her home overflowed with books, magazines and her beloved computer area, which she designed and was always improving and enhancing. Guests never left without a thoughtfully clipped article or story she believed they would enjoy. After retiring from Unisys, Georgia earned her masters degree in Liberal Studies in 2005 from Villanova University (where her son also graduated). She was proud to share some of the same professors as Jeff and was honored with election to the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
In retirement, Georgia traveled with John and remained a constant source of support to her children and grandchildren. She loved visiting Gaby during her work in Europe and was a devoted audience member at The Haverford School, cheering on her grandson at the theater and the pool. Just before her passing, she proudly listened to her granddaughter Vivi preview her school presentation on pioneering computer engineer Grace Hopper, who had worked at Univac during Georgia's early years as a programmer.
Georgia was a brilliant, curious and authentic person who loved life. She was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed. She is survived by her husband, John; her daughter, Gabrielle (Scott); her son, Jeffrey (Amy); her grandchildren, Benjamin and Vivienne; and her sister, Jima Rice.
A private celebration of life will be held with family. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation https://www.themmrf.org/.
