Jeffrey Bittiger Obituary

Jeffrey Scott Bittiger, of Saylorsburg, PA, passed away in his home on July 19, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born in Jersey City, NJ on April 13, 1962, to Gary and Lois Bittiger. Jeff was an all-state baseball, basketball, and football player at Secaucus High School, and would later be inducted into the Hudson County Hall of Fame. Drafted by the Mets in the 7th round of the 1980 MLB Draft, Jeff pitched in parts of four MLB seasons, and was a member of the 1987 World Series Champion Minnesota Twins. He pitched 23 total seasons of professional baseball, a career that speaks not only to his talent, but to his sheer force of will. Despite his many accomplishments and accolades, Jeff was never boastful, and was extremely humble about his success. His tenacity and love for the game of baseball was surpassed only by his love for his family. Even after his cancer diagnosis, he continued to serve as a Pro Scout for the Oakland Athletics and Director of Player Personnel for the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, roles that he had passionately performed for many years. In the end, he attacked cancer like he attacked every other challenge in his life-with stubborn determination and immeasurable support from his devoted wife, Alicia. He was a passionate husband, father, ballplayer, coach, and scout. He will be tremendously missed by his family, and by those whose lives he touched through the great game of baseball. His legacy will live on through his beloved grandchildren: Heidi, Cierra, and William. He is also survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Alicia (Reinoso); his beloved children: Amber, Brett, Briana, and Jamie; his mother, Lois; his brother, Gary; and his sisters, Kerri and Jenny. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. A public memorial honoring Jeff's life will be held at a later date to be announced. William H. Clark Funeral Home, Inc.

Grew up in the neighborhood with Jeff and played baseball together for several years. Always the most talented player on the field, Jeff quietly led us to the consecutive Hudson County 4B league championships in `77, `78 and `79.

I vividly remember SHS varsity baseball tryouts in 1977. We had three returning catchers, all seniors, Jeff was a freshman. Coach Vitale had them each throw to second from behind the plate, the seniors first, then Jeff. The look on the seniors´ faces when Jeff threw that laser down to second!

My family then hosted a team dinner at our home after the season opener. The dinner turned into a competition to see who could eat the most manicotti. Jeff won that, too.

Thanks for the memories, Jeff.

My condolences to the Bittiger family. I knew Jeff way back in the 7th grade. Before competing against each other in league basketball games, we both made the Hudson County All-Star team and travelled to New Orleans for a National Tournament. I always remember Jeff as a soft spoken and shy kid back then and silently followed his baseball career through the years.
May God bless him and all the family and friends.

Sorry to hear of your loss. I knew Jeff through his baseball connections obviously for many years. He was one of my son's first pitching instructor over 20 years ago. My twins played with Brett on the Railers teams during their collegiate years. Jeff was always a huge presence during those summer seasons and made a lasting impact on the game nationwide, not just locally.
Rest in peace Jeff.

So sorry to learn of this
Jeff was an extremely talented athlete, all state in Baseball, Basketball and Football
He pitched Secaucus HS to its first and only State Championship in 1980.
Not only a terrific pitcher, he was a phenomenal hitter. I remember the home run he hit in the state semifinal, played at Livingston HS´s field. It went so far he could have walked around the bases. Supremely confident in his abilities, but never boastful, just a great kid. Condolences to his family, RIP Jeffrey. You touched so many people´s lives. I am honored to be one of them.

My sincere condolences go out to Jeff´´s family. I was Jeff´s high school baseball coach and often commended him on his leadership skills. He was the heart of our 1980 State Championship Team. His loss saddens me greatly.

My Deepest condolences to Alicia and the kids! We will keep you all in our prayers.

Jeff - thank you for playing such a huge roll in my son Connor´s childhood and young adult baseball life.
You truly were a great man and a great teacher of the game. You didn´t just teach the boys how to play the game, you were also teaching them how to grow into being good men.
Thank you for all the time and care you put into my son and all the kids you took the time to teach the game you loved!
You will never be forgotten!
May you RIP

Coach - you helped so many kids and families find the "right spot" for their son´s baseball journey. But you also cared about these boys becoming responsible young men.

Our family will never forget you.

To Alicia and the kids - so sorry for your loss.
