John Mackes Obituary

John Raymond Mackes, 66, of Allentown, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones, on September 11, 2025, at St. Luke's Allentown. Born in Allentown, he was the son of the late Ethel Mackes. He was the loving husband of Lisa M. (Pudliner) Mackes, with whom he shared nine years of marriage this past June. John was a 1976 graduate of Dieruff High School. Early in his career, he worked for Sears, Roebuck & Co. He later dedicated his life to law enforcement, serving the Lehigh County Department of Corrections as a corrections officer for 19 years. After retirement, he worked part time with the Lehigh County Sheriff's Office providing security at the Lehigh County Courthouse. Passionate about sports, John was a softball coach at Dieruff High School from 1996-2004. He also founded the Mountainville Bobcats softball team, sharing his love for the game with the community. John loved gardening, being outdoors, and spending time in nature. Above all, he cherished his family. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, whose love and kindness touched all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Lisa M. (Pudliner) Mackes; daughter, Trina, and husband, Mike Rooney; son, Brett, and wife, Lisa Azar; and grandchildren, Bryce, Daniel, and Aria. A calling period will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2025, from 9:30–11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's R.C. Church, 122 Union St., Catasauqua, PA. A Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. in the church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions in his memory may be made out to either his son Brett Mackes or the funeral home and mailed to: Brubaker Funeral Home, Inc., 327 Chestnut St., Coplay, PA. 18037. I worked for many years with John and will say he was a very calming force in what many times was an uncalm environment. I thank him for for helping teach me the ropes in the new position. I will still smile remembering the great stories we both shared about the job and life in general. Eternal peace brother.

I actually met John before I started at the medical department at LCJ. My daughter introduced him to me at of all places Stooges Bar. When I started working at LCJ John was known as one of the kindest CO's and he definitely was. He sure did brag about his family. My top 2 in my remembrance of John are his Blackstone and his nickname for his home Pudsplatz.
