John Maynes Obituary

John Charles Maynes Jr., OFS, 78, beloved husband of Patricia Ann (Verdon) Maynes, passed away on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at Lehigh Valley Hospital. Born in the Olney neighborhood of Philadelphia, John was the son of the late John C. Maynes Sr. and Eleanor (Courtney) Maynes. He was the last male direct descendant to carry the Maynes family name. John was a dedicated athlete, playing football at Cardinal Dougherty in Philadelphia and continuing his passion on the field at Villanova. His love for sports extended beyond his playing days, as he enthusiastically coached football at different high schools over many years, in addition to coaching Little League. He also proudly served as President of the Olney Eagles Youth Organization. John's commitment to guiding and mentoring young people was a central theme throughout his life, further exemplified by his impactful career as a youth probation officer for the City of Philadelphia, a role from which he retired. His life's mission revolved around helping kids, a sentiment that captured his generous spirit. Beyond his work and coaching, John found joy in fishing, golfing, and the companionship of his beloved dogs, Champ and Chips. Above all, he cherished spending time with his family. John is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Pat; his loving daughters, Shannon Black and her husband Chris, and Heather Fischer. He also leaves behind his sister, Patricia Leach, wife of the late Lee; his cherished grandchildren, Michael Fischer, Courtney Golden and her husband Zach, and Colin Black; and several nieces and nephews who will dearly miss him. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at 11:00 AM at St. Teresa of Calcutta Roman Catholic Church (256 Swamp Pike, Schwenksville, PA 19473), with Fr. Paul Brandt officiating. Burial will follow at Limerick Garden of Memories. A visitation will be held prior to the mass, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John's name to the Franciscan Charities (franciscancharitiesinc.org), an organization close to his heart that embodies his lifelong dedication to helping others.
