Lillian Smyles Obituary

Lillian Smyles, age 93, of Jenkintown, PA, and formerly of Mount Vernon, NY, passed away on August 30, 2025. Lillian was born on March 6, 1932, in Philadelphia, PA, to Flossie and John B. Fortson. Most of her years were spent as a devoted and loving mother and wife, cherishing her family above all else. She was the beloved wife of Harry M. Smyles, renowned classical oboist and one of the founders of the Symphony of the New World, one of the earliest integrated orchestras in the United States. Together, Lillian and Harry were featured in Life magazine on March 11, 1957, in an article titled The Negro and the North: Segregation is illegal, yet he encounters a great deal of discrimination, photographed by Harry's good friend and renowned photographer Gordon Parks. Lillian was an integral part of Harry's success, offering steadfast support, encouragement, and managing the home front with grace and dedication throughout his celebrated career. After moving to the Philadelphia area to be closer to family, Lillian developed and maintained lasting relationships and found an active, happy life. She was an avid gardener, a passionate reader, and considered one of the best cooks in the world, delighting family and friends with her culinary talents. Lillian adored her two grandchildren, Adam and Hanna, more than anything in the world, and her love for them was a bright and enduring part of her life. Known for her warmth, generosity, and unwavering dedication to her family and friends, Lillian balanced her role with a quiet strength that inspired all who knew her. She was generous not only with her heart but also with her resources, supporting many organizations throughout her life. Lillian is survived by her son, John Smyles; daughter-in-law, Karen Smyles; grandchildren, Hanna and Adam Smyles; and a host of wonderful relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Beverly Smyles, and her husband, Harry M. Smyles. Services will be private. The family suggests that those who wish may donate to their favorite charity in her name. Her wisdom, strength, and unwavering kindness will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
