Louis Mertus Obituary

Louis J. Mertus, 90, formerly of Hellertown, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 11, 2025, at the Inpatient Hospice at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown. He was the devoted husband of the late Marie M. (Meseros) Mertus, who died on January 30, 2016. Born in Hellertown on September 8, 1934, he was the son of the late Louis and Catherine (Szaradics) Mertus. Louis worked as a machinist for the PB&NE Railroad for 30 years until his retirement. In addition to his work with the railroad, he was also proud to have farmed at the former Weyhill Farms. In his retirement, Louis volunteered at the Hugh Moore Park "Easton Canal Museum." A faithful member of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Bethlehem, Louis was known as a "jack of all trades" and took great pride in building his own home-an enduring legacy of his hard work and craftsmanship. He is lovingly remembered by his sons: Louis J. (Jodi) Mertus of Bethlehem Township, Jeffrey M. Mertus (Faye L.) of Macungie, Thomas E. Mertus (Nancy A.) of Allentown, Andrew A. Mertus (Lori A.) of Hellertown; daughter-in-law: Deborah Mertus of Bethlehem; sister: Marguerite Nyce of Telford; 9 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Anthony F. Mertus. Family and friends are invited to call from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, July 18, 2025, at Heintzelman Funeral Home, Inc., 326 Main Street, Hellertown, followed by a service at 11 a.m. Interment will be at The Union Cemetery of Hellertown. A funeral repast will be held immediately following the graveside service at The Carriage House at Heintzelman's.
