Mary Makros Obituary
Mary Ann (Demediuk) Makros, age 100, wife of the late Alexander H. Makros of Pottstown, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 11th, 2025 in the Reading Hospital.
Mary enjoyed a bucolic childhood growing up on her family farm in Chester County. She and her siblings liked to explore in the woods, play in the barn, and care for their animals. But it wasn't all play-their days were also filled with doing farm chores such as gathering eggs, cleaning out the stalls, and tending to the crops. As the oldest girl in the family, Mary often looked after her siblings and helped out much around the house. One hot summer day on a trip to the local swimming hole, she even saved her little sister from drowning.
Mary attended a one-room schoolhouse during her elementary and middle school years. In 1941 she graduated from Warwick High School (now part of OJR School District). While there, she participated in academic studies as well as home economics classes. The skills she learned in home ec followed her through her life as she was an excellent seamstress and an amazing baker. Everyone always looked forward to her Christmas cookies and her special pound cake. Along with her studies, she also enjoyed playing sports, especially field hockey.
During World War II, Mary worked at Jacobs Aircraft Engine Company making engine parts. Her next job was at the Vienna restaurant where she worked as a server. It was there that she met her husband Alex.
Mary and Alex were blessed with 3 children-Harry, Marie, and Linda. After her children went to school, Mary began working at Boyertown Packaging. It was from there that she retired after 25 years. After retiring she and her husband enjoyed traveling to visit their children and grandchildren as well as going to yard sales and "Perky" to see what treasures they could find.
Mary was a devoted daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and aunt. Her greatest joy was showering her family and friends with love. She was always present, willing to give advice, or lend a helping hand. If you needed something/anything, she had it and was always willing to share it. Her generosity of spirit and heart was remarkable, and she will be greatly missed.
Mary was predeceased by her parents Fedor and Anna (Slobodin) Demediuk, husband Alexander Makros, son Harry Makros, and two brothers, Peter F. Demediuk and Stephen J. Demediuk, two sons-in-law, Kee Robinson and Tom Pickrell.
She is survived by two daughters, Marie Robinson (Kee-deceased) of Reno, NV and Linda Pickrell (Tom-deceased) of Reno, NV; two grandchildren, Kelly Makros and Brad Robinson; one sister, Pauline (Demediuk) Standhardt; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Saturday, September 20th at Catagnus Funeral Home located at 711 North Franklin Street, Pottstown, PA. Visitation will be held from 9:30-10:30 AM. Service will be held at 10:45. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Pottstown.
