Bennie Willis Obituary
Bennie Willis, affectionately known as "Ben," was born on November 30, 1942, to the late Robert Lee Willis, Sr. and the late Dorsey Ree (Young) Willis in Cuthbert, Georgia.
At an early age, Bennie joined and attended Virgil Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, where he remained active until moving away. He was educated at Randolph County Training School and later attended Weaver High School in Hartford, Connecticut.
In 1963, Bennie married the love of his life, Raymell Thornton.
"Ben" was known for being a strong-willed and determined man. Those who knew him best often said it was his way or no way, and this bold spirit shaped the way he lived his life. He had a passion for motorcycles and could often be found enjoying the open road. He also loved fishing and found joy in peaceful days spent near the water. Bennie especially enjoyed being with his dogs, family, and friends. He was known for his great sense of humor and the laughter he brought to those around him. Bennie was employed by Kessler Construction as a truck driver, where he was respected for his dedication and hard work.
On August 23, 2025, Bennie departed this life at Hartford Hospital, to be reunited with his loved ones who passed before him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Lee Willis, Sr. and Dorsey Ree Willis; his beloved wife, Raymell Willis; his only son, Gregory Willis; his brother, James Willis (husband of Barbara Willis); his sister-in-law, Maudie Willis (wife of Tommy Willis); and his in-laws Elmira Mallard and Willie Frank Thornton.
The memories Bennie leaves behind will forever be cherished by his daughters, Stacey (Donald) Johnson of Bloomfield, Connecticut, and Nakesha Beatty of Fayetteville, North Carolina; his siblings, Robert Willis, Jr. of Cuthbert, Georgia, Sylvester Willis of Cuthbert, Georgia, Tommy Willis of Hyde Park, Massachusetts, and Sandra J. Willis of Cuthbert, Georgia. He also leaves behind his brothers-in-law, Alton Thornton of Marlborough, Connecticut, and Huwerl Thornton of Bloomfield, Connecticut. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Troy Willis, Janai Willis, Jaquan Prude (Jessica Prude), Jasuan Prude, Obbie Prude, Riana Clark, and Tyler Willis (TJ), along with ten great grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, and a host of other family members. He will also be remembered for the love he had for his two beloved dogs, Meeka and Paris.
Bennie's life was marked by his love for family, his faith, his hard work, and his enjoyment of life's simple pleasures. He will be remembered for his strength, his laughter, and the legacy of love he leaves behind.
