Bette Houchin Obituary

Bette Lou Arnold Houchin was born January 1947 in Pittsburg Pennsylvania to Mary Louise Locke Arnold and Walter John Arnold. She died at home July 2 2025. Survived by her two sons John Jr. and David and dog Riley.
Her father's job took her to live many places. Including, Pittsburg, Murfreesboro Tennessee before final ending up in Fairfield Ohio for her high school years.
After high school she enrolled to The Ohio State University. Where she was studying for an Architecture major. It was there she met her besties, one Sue. They would spend rest of her life conversing over the rest of her years. While in Columbus, she would meet the love of life, John Houchin. They would talk thought open windows between the two apartments. Their first date was a nice walk on High Street, talking before getting slice of pizza. After a couple years, they were wed and shipped off to Germany has army wife.
Upon returning from Germany, they move back to Ohio and started a family, in February 1973 came John Jr and in January of 1977 came David. When they move to Massachusetts she enroll into UMass, Amherst. Getting a Bachelor Degree in Computer Science. She did a little teaching and dabbled in writing and illustrating. During the energy crisis in the early Eighties, she got a political cartoon published in the local paper. A drawing of a family bundled in winter coats indoors because "I just got the heating bill."
Moving to Salem Connecticut she continued teaching from time to time, and continued dabbling in writing and illustration. When the family arrive in Louisiana she found jobs at local newspaper and Wilson's Engraving were she design packaging for places like Stop&Shop to Coke before moving back to Connecticut where she spent time painting and writing which pass down to her kids.
She was and always has been animal lover from German Shepherds to Great Pyrenees. At one point having three cats and three dogs. Along the way, birds, fishes, and mice. When in Louisiana, after the loses of Boomer, our Newfoundland, she always wanted a Dalmatian since she loved 101 Dalmatian. She she went out to look at the puppy. When dad return that night from work she told to be quiet to let the puppy Butler to rest before heading out to work at the newspaper. David met Butler after being pick up after helping out team at a football game. She went to look not to buy but fell in love with Butler minute she saw him.
