Claire Angela Hendricks

Claire Angela Hendricks, 82, of Hamden, passed away August 30, 2025. She was born December 10, 1942 in Jamaica to the late Frederick Jackson and the late Lilly A. Francis. She leaves behind her longtime companion, Maury Steigman of Hamden, and cousins, Joseph and Gloria Somers, Sr. of Miami, FL, Joseph Somers, Jr. of Atlanta, GA, Charles Somers of Huntingtown, MD, Alyson Somers of Miami, FL, Suzette Burgher, niece, Bermuda, and Richard Moore, Caroline Darton-Moore, and Derick Boyd, all of England. Claire graduated from the University of the West Indies in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, earning honors in Spanish Language. She later went on to attend Columbia University where she earned a Master of Arts degree in 1973. A resident of New Haven for many years, Claire moved to Hamden in 2018. She was a longtime employee of the City of New Haven as a grant writer, among other duties. She was one of the first five Black flight attendants for British Overseas Airway Corporation. She also was a translator for Yale-New Haven Hospital, and an adjunct faculty member of Gateway Community College. Friends are invited to gather at Beecher & Bennett Funeral Home, 2300 Whitney Avenue, Hamden on Friday, October 3rd from 12:00-4:00 p.m., with a prayer service to be held in the funeral home at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be private.
