Donald Smith Obituary
Donald W. Smith, 92, of Manchester died peacefully at home surrounded by the care and comfort of his family on the evening of Monday, January 20, 2025. Donald was born to Lynwood and Vera (Galasso) Smith, grew up in Stafford Springs, and graduated from Windham Technical High School. It was during his senior year while hanging around the roller rink when fate would introduce him to the love of his life, Marjorie (Sis) Kibbe. Donald and Marjorie were married on February 7, 1953, and would go on to enjoy nearly 72 years together.
During the Korean War, Donald honorably served with the Marine Corps where he achieved the rank of Sergeant. Upon his return to the States, Donald and Marjorie settled together in Manchester. He found work with the Southern New England Telephone Company where he was employed for 38 years. Donald and Marjorie would purchase a home together; close enough to work that Don could ride his bike to and from. Donald was a long-standing member of the Manchester Senior Center. There he was a member of the bocce league, maintained a vegetable garden for many years and volunteered in the kitchen helping prepare and serve lunches. He cherished the friendships he made there.
Donald found his truest purpose as a father and provider when the couple welcomed five dear children into the world. Hard working to his core, Donald was ever motivated to support his family and give them a better life than he'd had himself. He would never turn down a working opportunity and knew the importance of earning a dollar. A family cottage in Clinton hosted countless summer vacations, though regardless of the location, it was time with his family that Donald cherished the most. His dedication to family gatherings and traditions, such as annual camping trips and holidays with extended family, gifted a treasure trove of memories for those lucky enough to know and love him.
Donald is survived by his beloved wife Marjorie Smith, daughter Kim (Bruce, deceased) Jenack and sons Wayne, Scott (Karen) and Russell (Susan Furbish) all of Manchester. His legacy is also carried on by his three adored grandchildren Donald (Trinity), Jennifer, Daniel (Meredith) and two great-grandchildren, Braylon and Shelby. In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by his son James, and brother Lynwood.
A Celebration of Life with calling hours will be held at Tierney Funeral Home on Friday, February 7, 2025, from 3:30 to 6:00.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Manchester Senior Center at 549 East Middle Tpk Manchester, CT 06045 or to The Visiting Nurse & Health Services Hospice Center at 8 Keynote Dr. Vernon, CT 06066.
