Dr.Lawrence Wartel Obituary

Lawrence J Wartel MD of Woodbridge, Connecticut died on October 6, 2025. He was 85 years old. Larry was the loving husband of Sheila Wartel, and they were married for 61 years. He was the devoted father of Matthew Wartel (Marsha) of Alexandria, Virginia and Sharon Lurie (Keith) of Larchmont, New York. He was the proud grandfather of Samuel Wartel (Lin), Sarah Wartel Moszkowski (Ethan), Emily Wartel, Samantha Lurie and Joshua Lurie. Larry was born on May 27th, 1940, in Middletown, Connecticut and lived in Moodus, Connecticut where his father Matthew, who practiced dentistry, and his mother Dorothy who owned a summer resort with her parents Aaron and Rose. Larry attended the Loomis School, Tufts University where he graduated Cum Laude in 1962, and Tufts School of Medicine. He was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society and the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society of which he was elected President in 1965. Following graduation from Tufts Medical School, Larry did his internship and residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. From 1971 through 1973 he served as a Major in the United States Air Force at Vandenberg Air Force Base where he was Chief of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 1973, he then joined the Obstetrics, Gynecology and Infertility group PC where he remained in practice until his retirement. He was a member of the clinical faculty at the Yale School of Medicine and subsequently was promoted to Clinical Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the Yale School of Medicine, one of a few community physicians to achieve this highest of clinical ranks. He later joined the faculty of the Netter School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University as Clinical Professor where he was very involved in teaching medical students. Larry served as Associate Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Yale-New Haven Hospital for 23 years. He was a member of numerous medical and obstetrics and gynecology societies, published multiple medical papers, and served on many important hospital committees. He was elected Community Physician of the Year by the Interns and Residents whom he taught. Larry loved and followed closely all sports sections of the local papers and was an ardent fan of the NY Yankees and NY Giants. He was an excellent swimmer and swam miles both at the JCC and the Yale Payne Whitney Gymnasium Pool. He and Sheila travelled near and far and he loved touring to Europe, the Middle East, and South America. He was a reader of mysteries and spy novels and a big fan of Public TV and Brit Box. Over the past few years, Larry greatly enjoyed monthly lunches with his retired friends and former colleagues from Yale. Larry was a dedicated physician, always upholding the most stringent of ethical and compassionate practices for his patients. He was esteemed in the New Haven Community and known as the "doctor's doctor," attending the births of many children of doctors and other professionals.
