Elaine Gordon Obituary
Elaine Rose Gordon (nee Lowe Shue) was born in St. Thomas, Jamaica, on February 7, 1960 and died on May 18, 2025. She was the beloved wife of Samuel Gordon for more than 37 years. They were childhood sweethearts, dating since their teens. She leaves behind her husband, Sam, her three children, Jacqueline, Michelle and Timothy and her much loved grandson, Jayce. She also leaves her sisters, Marcia Lowe and Lorraine Lowe, brothers Dr. Courtney Lowe and his wife Debbie, Kenneth Lowe and his wife Sharon, Gregory Lowe, Paul Lowe, James Gordon, and Raymond Lowe and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her her mother (Lucille Morrison), her father (Kenneth Lowe) and two brothers (Donovan Lowe and Troy Gordon).
Elaine was the president and CEO of Crown Steel Construction Inc. for 19 years. She was unusual in her business, one of the very few women running a construction company that worked on bridges. The company thrived under her leadership doing annual sales in the millions of dollars. Her construction company was selected as a beta site for new industry software because her feedback was astute and valued.
Elaine fought a valiant battle with cancer for 13 years. During those years she did not let cancer rule her life. She continued to watch over her husband and children, and was a gracious hostess to family and friends. At the same time, she also had a full time job, was the photographer for the church and all church events, her children's school events and family gatherings. She also remained active in the church and performed assigned tasks with excellence. She organized Sight and Sound trips to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, for several years.
Elaine was an energetic and dedicated volunteer at the Hope SDA church food pantry and was very invested in seeing that the pantry not only served the community, but that it thrived and both the volunteers and clients were treated with dignity. We have lost a multi-talented member of our family. In addition to being a gifted photographer, she was a skilled seamstress. She even taught herself to write computer programs that were tailored to run the church food pantry more efficiently. Elaine also created flyers and programs for events, and took pride in every detail. She was tireless, and never settled for second best. She loved card games and other group games. She made every family gathering special by making sure she taught everyone how to play Ludo, then made it extra special by beating everyone at the game too. She was gifted at mathematics and her accountants loved working with her. Elaine was also a fabulous cook and she excelled at baking. Her Jamaican Christmas fruitcake was spectacular (no kidding!). She found a lot of joy in entertaining and having friends and family for dinner. She had the ability of making everyone feel welcome.
Above everything else, Elaine took much delight and pride in being a mother. Having fostered multiple children earlier in life, she took such pleasure in raising three of her own. She would work tirelessly at night on school projects with her kids, would volunteer to be the chaperone on school trips, and never missed a chance to be a substitute for a class. She would give kids a ride home from school, or even a ride back to her own house to wait for their parents if they were working late. She fed everyone that walked in the door, and made sure all the kids that entered her house were full, happy, and behaving the right way. Everyone called her mom and she will be missed greatly by all who had a chance to grow up around her.
Elaine was much admired and respected for her character. She was known for her integrity, and could always be relied on to do what was right. She was honest and kind when asked for her opinion. She could be trusted with whatever was left in her hands. Her strength was quiet and based on her belief in God.
Elaine had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. She was kind and generous to family and friends with her time and talent. She was a loving caregiver to her mother, grandmother and aunt. She leaves a gigantic hole in the hearts of everyone who knew her; but we celebrate and thank God for the time we had with her. Truly, Elaine was a great gift from God!
Her family will receive friends on Monday, June 2, 2025 from 10:30-11:30, with the service at 11:30 am Hope Seventh Day Adventist Church, 1052 Blue Hills Ave, Bloomfield. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, Bloomfield.
