Eugene Charman Obituary

Rev. Eugene J. Charman, entered into eternal life on March 25, 2025, the solemnity of the Annunciation. Fr. Gene was born in Newport, RI on March 10, 1944 to the late Genevieve (Grudzinski) Charman and Eugene R. Charman. Fr. Gene spent his childhood growing up along the shoreline and was a proud alumni of Notre Dame High School in West Haven. It was at Notre Dame where he first encountered the Brothers of the Holy Cross, who were essential in forming Fr. Gene into a Christian man of faith. After graduating from Notre Dame, Fr. Gene attended Stonehill College, where he studied physics, and decided to pursue a calling to religious life and entered the Novitiate of the Brothers of the Holy Cross. Discerning that he was called to the priesthood, Fr. Gene began studying for the Archdiocese of Hartford at Theological College in Washington, D.C., and was ordained to the priesthood on May 22, 1971 by Archbishop John F. Whealon at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford. Upon ordination, Fr. Gene was assigned to St. James in Manchester. Fr. Gene loved his priesthood and his many assignments in Southington, Woodbridge, West Haven, Oakville, Cheshire, Orange, and North Haven. In his priesthood, Fr. Gene was an early computer guru, and was tasked with helping to implement computers into many of the parishes of the Archdiocese. In time after evading becoming a pastor for many years, Fr. Gene was assigned to St. Thomas Becket parish as the administrator and later pastor in 2000, and stayed there until 2012, when he was assigned as pastor to Holy Infant parish in Orange. Fr. Gene retired as a priest of the Archdiocese of Hartford in 2019, and in retirement helped out in many parishes in the greater New Haven area. Fr. Gene enjoyed studying John Henry Newman, the sarum rite, and all things technological. Father was predeceased by his sisters, Patricia O'Brien and Barbara Hughes, and is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial for Fr. Gene will be celebrated by the Most Reverend Christopher J. Coyne, Archbishop of Hartford on Monday, March 31 at 11 a.m. at St. Bridget of Sweden Parish, 175 Main St., Cheshire, CT. The Mass will be live streamed on St. Bridget of Sweden's Facebook page. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Notre Dame High School, Attn. Development Office, One Notre Dame Way, West Haven, CT 06516. Beecher & Bennett Funeral Home, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden has been entrusted with the arrangements. I knew him from Saint Barnabas Church , Washington Ave., North Haven, Connecticut as Father Charman my Pastor there, he always had a smile for me and every time he saw me, he said, Roberta how are you today? I will miss these words and cherish them in my heart. He was a wonderful priest and will be missed by myself and a lot of parishioners from Saint Barnabas Church I am sure of this. AMEN, Father Charman, RIP Eternal.

Fr. Gene, you are the greatest! You stretched me musically as a director, like when you said, no instrumentation during the Triduum masses. Totally a capella! But we did it, in harmony and kept the pitch so your ears wouldn´t be offended. You taught us so much with your homilies, you laughed and shared wine with us, and you were there to listen to our troubles with an open heart. You are truly a Blessing in my life and Saul´s´. Thank you. You have been and will continue to be prayed for. Much love.

I fondly recall Fr. Charman, while he was assigned to Immaculate Conception Parish, in Southington. I sought (and appreciated) his counsel, at a time when my Father Henry developed sepsis, after a prolonged period of lying in traction, following a fall. His counsel was very much appreciated. Sincerely,

Father Gene was such a wonderful priest. When my kids were little I loved how he showed them to take a stone and put in the vase in the water fountain and say a blessing for a person for each stone they put in. If I had that fountain now , I would put a stone in and say, God bless, Father Gene

Father Gene was an important part of my family's lives when he arrived at St. Thomas Becket. We bonded immediately over our love of dogs and he could always be counted on for having the large milk-bone dog biscuits at the ready for any dogs he encountered. My now grown daughter also reminded me that he started the blessing of the pets on St. Francis Day and he blessed her guinea pig! He was a wonderful person and I'm grateful we got to know him. He will be missed.

We are sad to hear of Farther Gene´s passing. At Saint Thomas Becket, Paul Sandor was asked by Father Gene to make the crosses for the stations of the cross. They formed a bond and enjoyed each others company. Paul is wondering where the crosses went. God Bless you Father Gene.

Fr Gene played a huge part of our lives in the 80´s our girls grew up with him at our table, working on cars and sharing/debating so many issues. (We provided him with lots of material for hid homilies) He shared in the foundation we provided for our three girls to become the (almost) perfect adults and parents they are now. He had a way of explaining and sharing that was clear even when it could be completely over our heads. We gave him many examples of why he chose the right path and didn´t marry or have children! Lord I miss his laugh and humor. We have carried him in our hearts and lives throughout the years, sharing so much we learned from him. We have missed his presence here for years, but his memory has remained as it will continue.
With aching hearts,

I always enjoyed his homilies when he would fill in at St. Pio Pietrelcina Parish. Fr. Charman always seemed connected to the beauty around him and our lovely church. You were a good servant,
Father.
