George Serfass Obituary
George Serfass, also lovingly known as Dad, Papa Serf, and Papi was a devoted father, grandfather, and mentor, who passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, August 2, 2025. George was born in Ludlow, Vermont on December 26, 1953 to the late Irene and Gordon Serfass and was a graduate of Newington High School. George worked for 39 years for Pratt and Whitney, while simultaneously working in one of his most beloved roles as a coach, both on the basketball court and on the baseball field. Fulfilling this role while serving hundreds of ball players, you never saw him without a smile or twinkle in his eye out on the court or field. George leaves behind a legacy of excellence, leadership, and love for the game. From the first whistle to the final inning, George gave everything to the young people he guided. He was also an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, New York Giants and UConn Huskies.
George truly was one of the most selfless humans who made an impact on anyone that was lucky enough to know him. His love for his children, grandchildren and friends was evident in the way he lived every part of his life. He was a constant presence at family gatherings, sporting events and school activities, offering unwavering support and love. George was legendary in the community. His kindness and warmth earned him lifelong friendships with people from all walks of life. Whether he was getting his steps in at the track or paying a visit to Elm Hill Pizza, he formed deep and lasting relationships wherever he went. Finally, among all the people in George's life, his grandchildren were his greatest joy.
George leaves behind his two sons, Joseph Serfass and his wife Tara (Boisvert) Serfass, of Wethersfield, and Josh Serfass and his wife Heather (Bertrand) Serfass, of Berlin. George was a proud grandfather "Papi" to his four grandchildren, Ava and Clara Serfass and Rocco and Julia Serfass. He also leaves his sister Linda Serfass and brother Paul Serfass. Besides his parents, George is predeceased by his sister Sandy Hendersen, and brothers Duane and Richard Serfass. He is lovingly remembered by a wide circle of friends, many dear nieces and nephews, and all those whose lives he touched. We will miss you in hundreds of ways but have peace knowing the lives you have touched around you. We love you, we are proud of you and will miss you forever.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with George's family on Friday, August 8th, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Duksa Family Funeral Home at Newington Memorial, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington. All are invited to his Funeral Service on Saturday, August 9th, at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in West Meadow Cemetery immediately following. In honor of George's deep love for sports and the teams and players he mentored, supported, and cheered for, we kindly ask all those who shared that connection-whether as players, coaches, or devoted fans-to wear their team jerseys or the colors of the team or sport that connects you to him. Whether it's from Capitols Baseball, Windsor Warriors, or even teams he loved to watch like the Red Sox or Giants etc., your tribute in jersey or color will be a powerful symbol of the legacy he leaves behind.
