Gerardo Rivera

With music in his heart and peace in his soul, Gerardo Rivera, 84, of East Hartford, passed away peacefully at home on October 8, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. He was the devoted husband of over 60 years to Margarita (Berrios) Rivera, his lifelong partner and greatest blessing. Born in Puerto Rico on September 24, 1941, to the late Mariano Rivera and Monseratte Colón, Gerardo built a life rooted in faith, family, and quiet strength. After moving to Hartford, he dedicated more than 30 years to the City of Hartford Board of Education, working in Buildings and Grounds until his retirement in 2004. Gerardo found joy in life's simple treasures-strumming his guitar, walking beneath the morning sun, golfing with friends, and feeling the thrill of a lucky slot machine. Yet nothing brought him greater happiness than time spent with his family. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were his pride and the rhythm of his heart. Along with his loving wife Margarita, Gerardo leaves behind his children: Lillian and her husband Israel, Gerardo Jr. and his husband Angel; Edgardo and his wife Maria; Joel Rivera; and Rebecca Lopez. He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren-Melissa, Alex, Edgardo Jr., Marielly, and Andrew-and his nine cherished great-grandchildren including Orlando and Sofia who were the absolute lights of his life, filling his days with laughter and love. He also leaves behind his four siblings; Zoraida, Joe, Carlos, and Carmen, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended friends whose lives were brightened by his warmth and laughter. He was pre-deceased by his siblings Blas, Cruza and Irene. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the Masonicare Hospice Care team for their exceptional compassion, guidance, and support during Gerardo's final days. Their kindness brought great comfort to both him and his loved ones. Family and friends are invited to gather in love and remembrance from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 13, 2025, at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Road, Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Gerardo's life will follow at Saint Lawrence Church of Maria Reina De La Paz Parish, 494 New Britain Avenue, Hartford.
