Hipolito Carrion Obituary
Hipolito Carrion, lovingly known to all as "Papo," passed away suddenly and unexpectedly due to cardiovascular illness at Hartford Hospital. He was 66 years old. Born on September 10, 1958, in Juncos, Puerto Rico, Papo was predeceased by his parents, Hipolito Carrion and Julia Bonilla. He spent many years in Hoboken, NJ, before moving to Meriden, CT in 1999, where he continued to build a life rooted in love, laughter, and family.
Papo worked as a skilled welder at Ultra Electronics, where he remained until his retirement in 2023. But his work ethic extended far beyond any job title. He was a hardworking man his entire life, putting in countless hours at every job he held to build the best life he could for his family. With Carmen at home raising their children and keeping their household strong, Papo took on the responsibility of providing with determination and pride. His hands were proof not just from labor, but from love, a quiet proof of the sacrifices he made so those he loved could thrive.
He is survived by his loving partner of 44 years, Carmen Gonzalez, with whom he shared a deep and enduring bond. Papo was a proud and devoted father to his children and their spouses: Joseph and Ailine, Carlos and Jessenia, Catherine and Eddie, and Benjamin and Arelis. He especially cherished his role as a grandfather, a role he wore with pride and joy. His grandchildren; Jared, Eli, Camirya, Triston, Akira, Kylie, Juli'anna, Makaylah, and Camila, were the light of his life and brought him endless happiness. A proud Yankees fan (who admittedly started rooting for the Red Sox after his move to Connecticut, yes, he jumped on the bandwagon!), Papo had a passion for sports, salsa music, and good company. He could often be found with a Budweiser in one hand and a bottle of Mr. Boston Blackberry Brandy in the other, surrounded by loved ones and salsa music that spoke to his soul.
Papo was famously stubborn and set in his "Papo" ways, traits that made him uniquely him and at times drove his children crazy (lol). He had a presence that couldn't be missed: whether it was a quick joke, a story you'd never forget, or simply a look that said more than words ever could. He was fiercely loyal, deeply devoted to his family, and a constant friend who showed his love in his own unmistakable way.
His absence leaves a hole that cannot be filled, but his spirit lives on in the stories, memories, and love shared by all who knew him. The family extends their deepest gratitude to the Neuro-Trauma ICU team at Hartford Hospital for their tireless care, compassion, and communication. Their dedication provided us with invaluable time at Papo's bedside in his final moments, a gift we will never forget!
His family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, June 1st from 1 to 4 p.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, CT 06450. A funeral service will commence at 4 p.m. in the funeral home. The burial will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Papo's memory may be made to his GoFundMe.
