Jean Schmaling Obituary

Waterbury, CT Jean M. Schmaling "Beloved mother, sister & aunt" Jean M. (O'Neil) Schmaling, 73, of Waterbury, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 31, 2025 at her home with her family by her side. She was the beloved wife of the late Sanford Schmaling. Jean was born in Waterbury, CT on October 1, 1951, a daughter of the late Gerald and Helen (Donston) O'Neil. She graduated from Kennedy High School in 1968 and before her retirement, Jean worked as a caretaker for the Oak Hill Group Home on Prospect Street in Watertown for many years. She enjoyed playing bingo and going to the casino to play the slot machines. She was a member of the Naugatuck YMCA. Jean is survived by her son, Wayne Schmaling and his fiancé, Jennifer Godwin of Vernon, CT, sister, Sheron Shepard of Waterbury, CT with whom she made her home with, brother, James O'Neil of Naugatuck, CT and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, William, Charles and Gerald O'Neil and sisters, Peggy Lubinski, Karen Dinneny and Anna O'Neil.. Arrangements: Calling hours for Jean will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2025 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.at Chase Parkway Memorial/The Albini Family Funeral Home, 430 Chase Parkway, Waterbury, CT. Her funeral service will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Jean's memory to: Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center – 1075 Chase Parkway, Waterbury, CT 06708 or Naugatuck YMCA – 284 Church St., Naugatuck, CT 06770.
