John Mongeau Obituary

John Scott Mongeau, Jr. passed away on March 24, 2025, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, Connecticut one day after his 58th birthday. His five-year courageous battle with stage 4 cancer is finally over. He was born on March 23, 1967, to John Sr. and the late Jill (Lupi) Mongeau in Springfield, Massachusetts. John attended schools in Springfield, Massachusetts, Long Island, NY, and graduated from Winsted High School, Connecticut. He also attended Northwest Connecticut Community College. John went on to work in the food and beverage business as a merchandiser, distributor, manager, and account manager for various companies to include Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company, Polar Beverage, Healthy Beverage Company, and Ace Distributors. His territories covered areas throughout Connecticut. John's favorite times were spent near his home with his friends and neighbors on West Hill Lake. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and boating or swimming in the Lake. He also enjoyed cooking and grilling, especially for his many friends. He loved the outdoors rising early each morning to open windows. Every spring he would help his friend, Lane, tap maple trees and then cook countless jars of maple syrup which he then gave to family and friends. His best friend and fur buddy was Miller, who he enjoyed walking throughout the neighborhood along with swimming in the West Hill Lake. John was all about helping others in any way he could. Throughout his illness he continued to live life to the fullest. John participated in clinical trials for cancer fighting treatments at the Smilow Cancer Center. This may account for why he lived for over 5 years with Stage 4 cancer. He found many friends there who cheered him on in his battle with cancer. His participation will hopefully lead to extending the life of others and perhaps curing cancer in the future. John is survived by his parents, John, Sr. and (Toni Etter) Mongeau, his aunt Donna Webster and her family, his stepsisters, Julie (William) Mui, Jennifer Etter, Hennah (Jeff Fair) Etter, and Heidi and Ben Bloom, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is also survived by his best friend and fur buddy Miller. He was preceded in death by his mother, Jill (Lupi) Mongeau, grandparents, Joseph and Dorothy Mongeau and George and Rita Lupi. The family would like to thank John's incredible neighbors and friends who helped him with visits, food, errands, transportation, dog sitting, and encouragement throughout his illness. A very special thank you to his neighbor, Marie, who went above and beyond to help John, always keeping the family updated on how he was doing. Also thank you to Marie's sister who has adopted Miller and given him a home. John was able to see videos of Miller playing in his new home before he passed. The family will be forever grateful. The family also wishes to thank all the doctors, nurses, and staff at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital for their compassion, concern and care of John and us during his month's stay there. Finally, thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Smilow Cancer Center who worked with John over the five years of treatment there. They were like family to him, cheering him on in his battle against cancer. Donations in John's memory can be made to the Smilow Cancer Center c/o Yale New Haven Office Development, PO Box 1849, New Haven, CT. 06508. Please note the donation is to Smilow Cancer Center in memory of John Mongeau, Jr. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
