Jonathan Silverman Obituary

Jonathan Silverman March 9, 1971 - February 15, 2025 Jonathan Silverman was born on March 9, 1971, in Anchorage, Alaska. He had Down Syndrome and did not speak in language, though he could understand. Instead of speaking he breathed and rumbled, rocking from side to side on his short legs while flipping a little black strap, and always being fully present with whoever he was with. When you met him you would see his blue eyes, his sticky-uppy hair, his natty little outfits that the house manager chose for him. He lived for many years in East Haven in a group home, and then at 1881 Litchfield Turnpike with many beloved housemates, including his best friend, Richie, who loved to collect dimes and nickels and who hugged and loved him every day. Jonny loved to steal Coolattas (iced drinks from Dunkin Donuts) from the staff office, to make instant chocolate pudding, to watch the colored fish in his fish tank, to sit on the floor with his legs in full lotus, or out on his porch swing, looking out at the forest behind his house. While most of us worry about the past and plan out the future, Jonny was able to live across several dimensions and time zones at once, without ever leaving this moment. He taught us about ways of being here in this world, loving without words, pressing his warm head against your hand or putting his stubby fingers in yours to squeeze. He was cared for tirelessly by many staff members at his group homes. He gave generously of his relaxed, soft, warm energy to everyone he met, and offered love everywhere. He is survived by his sister, Miryam Sas, his mother, and many beloved friends, housemates, caregivers, and chosen family. We will all miss him.
