Joseph S. Maiorano Sr.

Joseph S. Maiorano, Sr., 83, of Orange, died peacefully at home on April 24, 2025, surrounding by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Francesca Sasso Maiorano. Joe was born in New Haven on June 1, 1941 to the late Salvatore and Anna Collosso Maiorano. In 1968, Joe became the proprietor of the Maiorano Cheese Co. on Wooster Street. In 1973, along with his late father-in-law Lou Sasso, he operated Harry's Package Store in Westville. Joe began a career as a restauranteur in 1995 when he and his wife opened Tre Scalini Restaurant on Wooster Street, which remains an icon in the fine dining restaurants in New Haven. In 1997 he opened Polo Grill & Wine Bar on Elm Street in New Haven with his son Joseph, Jr. and in 2005 they opened Fire Restaurant. Joe loved to play pinochle and setback. He loved a good sports team as long as it favored the house. Joe especially enjoyed being at the restaurant sharing stories and meals with his customers who quickly became dear friends. He was a member of the St. Andrew the Apostle Society, the Santa Maria Maddalena Society and the former First Independent Club. He was the loving and supportive father of Louis Maiorano, Joseph S. Maiorano, Jr. and his wife Conny, Matthew Maiorano and his wife Michelle and Francesca Maiorano. He adored his granddaughters Giovanna and Olivia and was ecstatic to know that he would be a grandfather again in September. He was a loving brother to Mary Florenzano (late Frank) and Theresa Incarnato and her husband Nicola. He is also survived by his dear friends John Matteo, Don DeAngelis, Eddie Roberts, Jim Camuti, Bobby LoRusso and Steve Zamkov as well as his many nieces, nephews and cousins. Visiting hours will be Monday April 28th from 3-7pm in the Iovanne Funeral Home, Inc., 11 Wooster Place, New Haven. Friends are asked to go directly to Blessed Michael McGivney Parish at St. Michael Church, 29 Wooster Place, New Haven Tuesday morning at 10am for a Mass of Christian Burial. Entombment will be in Mount St. Peter Cemetery, Derby. Joe's family request that contributions in his memory be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
