Laurie Massaro Obituary

Laurie DeBenedet Massaro, a life-long member of the Morris Cove community, passed away suddenly at home on January 20, 2025. She was the beloved wife of Lou Massaro, with whom she shared 40 years of marriage. Laurie was a beacon of hope and positivity; bringing the sunshine with her everywhere she went. Born in New Haven on May 16, 1961, daughter of Andrew DeBenedet and the late Margaret Allen DeBenedet, Laurie was a graduate of St. Mary's High School and The Academy for Business Careers in New Haven. She worked for the Yale University Telecommunications Department for over 15 years before joining the staff at the New Haven Public Library, Ives Branch. Laurie loved the beach, photography, music, and foreign languages, however, her favorite hobby was making strangers into friends. "That's my friend" She was the proud mother of Andrew (AJ) and Kelly, Daniella (DD) and Luciana (Luch) Massaro. Sister of Stephen (Emelia) DeBenedet, Regina DeBenedet, and Andrea DeBenedet-Murgo (Dave). Laurie is survived by many beloved uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, godsons, family and friends. As Laurie would say- amore a tutti! Visiting Hours will be held on Sunday, January 26, 2025 from 3:00-6:00PM in the Iovanne Funeral Home, Inc. 11 Wooster Place in New Haven. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Pio of Pietrelcina Parish at St. Bernadette Church, 385 Townsend Ave. in New Haven. Please meet directly at Church. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Laurie, please visit our Tree Store.

Laurie,

I'll never forget our morning shifts at Ives together. Nobody could make me laugh like you did. Nobody could make me feel good about myself like you did. You accepted me and loved me at an incredibly difficult time in my life when many others failed to do so.

What I wouldn't give for another morning at circulation with you, scanning the returns in, cracking jokes, drinking Dunkin and talking about Johnny Cash. I'll never forget you using your feather duster on the books or the week you watched the Tammy Faye movie twice and couldn't stop signing and dancing out the songs. I'll never forget having drinks with you at Stony Creek Brewery -- and I'll always cherish the rose quartz you gave me.

I came to Ives to see you just the other day and learned that you were gone. I feel like I lost my favorite aunt. You showed me love when I needed it the most and for as long as God keeps me here, I will hold it in my heart. Your humor was my morning star, Laurie and it shined so bright.
