Leon Bunk Obituary

SEYMOUR, CT: Leon J. Bunk, Jr., age 78, a lifelong Seymour resident and beloved husband of 54 years to Katherine (Carrejo) Bunk, entered into peaceful rest on May 9, 2025, at his home. Leon, also fondly known to many as "Buddy", "Bud" or "Pop" was born on November 19, 1946, in Derby, son of the late Leon J. Sr. and Esther (Student) Bunk. He was a proud graduate of Seymour High School, Class of 1964, where he was active in many sports including baseball, basketball, and football. Leon was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, honorably serving his country during the Vietnam War. The joy of Leon's life was his family, where most of his time was dedicated. In addition to his cherished wife Kathy, he leaves behind his devoted son David Bunk and his wife Jennifer (Markelon) of Beacon Falls; his loving daughter, Carrie (Bunk) Minar and her husband Dan of Milford; his dear brother, Edward Bunk (Barbara) of Seymour; and his adored granddaughters Abby, Emma, and Charlotte, of whom he was immensely proud and spoke of often. He also leaves many first cousins, close friends and cherished brother and sister-in-laws with whom memories were made during holidays, trips, weddings and family reunions. Leon loved the Lord and was a longtime member of Beacon Hill Evangelical Free Church in Monroe, where he enjoyed serving as a cook and usher for the fellowship. A sportsman and outdoorsman at heart, Leon found joy in nature-whether golfing, hunting or fishing. His annual fishing and hunting trips to Maine with close friends were a highlight of his year. A competitive bowler, Leon achieved several perfect games and proudly brought home league trophies with his team, the Smokey Spares. Leon had a sociable carefree spirit and great sense of humor, he was a joy to be with and renowned for his storytelling that always brought laughter. He loved hosting parties, dancing to the oldies, playing cribbage and sharing jokes. Later in life, he continued to enjoy the simple pleasures-going to his granddaughter's soccer games, playing cards with friends and family, planning trips at a lake, competing in fantasy sport leagues and tackling challenging jigsaw or Sudoku puzzles. Leon was passionate about cooking and loved assuming the role of "grill man" at summer barbecues, always cooking for others with enthusiasm and care. He was especially known for his famous Rhode Island clam chowder, a favorite at gatherings. In addition to his outdoor cooking, Leon enjoyed spending time in the kitchen, preparing delicious meals and traditional Polish dishes. Every year, he and Kathy carried on the cherished Christmas tradition of making pierogi using his mother Esther's recipe. This event grew in size and warmth over the years, and Leon always made sure there was enough mashed potato and sauerkraut filling to go around. Before every meal, Leon gave the blessing, a tradition that gave glory to God and brought his family together with gratitude and love. Leon led by example, and his unwavering faith and deep family values live on through those he loved, ensuring his memory remains eternal. Calling Hours will be held on Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Ralph E. Hull Funeral Home, 161 West Church Street, Seymour. Interment with Military Honors will be held on Friday at 10:00 AM at Mountain Meadows Cemetery, 117 Mountain Road, Seymour. A service in celebration of Leon's life will be held at Beacon Hill Evangelical Free Church, 371 Old Zoar Road, Monroe, at a later date. I was the babysitter for Leon and Eddy when their parents worked or enjoyed a Saturday night out.
Now their son Dave is a neighbor of mine. My condolences to the Bunk family.
