Paul Hychko Obituary
Waterbury
"Beloved husband, son, brother, father, and grandfather"
Paul M. Hychko Sr., 63 of Waterbury, passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2025, in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family. Paul fought a long, courageous battle with cancer, which took him from our world much too soon.
Born in Waterbury on October 19, 1961, to John and the late Marie Hychko, he was one of nine children in his family. Affectionately referred to as one of the twins, Paul was in the middle of the pack. He had a smile that could light up a room and often a story to accompany his joy.
Paul attended Sprague School, St. Anne Grammar School and graduated from Holy Cross High School in 1979. Upon graduation, Paul set out to become a crane operator with Local 478 Union of Operating Engineers. Paul was a proud member of the union. He was a self made man who took immense pride in his independence and work ethic. Paul was a skilled crane operator, having worked with Marino Crane, Smedley Crane, Hallamore Corporation, Industrial Riggers and he cofounded J & M Equipment. Paul forged several lifelong friendships from those companies. Paul worked on projects including the Millstone Power Plant, Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun, and many area hospitals. Oftentimes, you could call him if you were lost and describe two landmarks, and he would tell you he either put that building up or was there when the prior structure was leveled. He was a walking road map, and could guide you safely to your destination without hesitation.
On a summer day, you would hear the sounds of big band orchestras echoing through the house. There was always something special about the first few measures of the song Unforgettable leaving you humming it all day. Hearing him sing along to the lyrics will forever be a favorite memory. Paul immensely enjoyed cooking, and would often be found recreating his latest recipe, or grilling for his family and friends. He enjoyed many nights watching Frasier or The Andy Griffith Show, always whistling the theme song. The notes of simpler times and his love for nostalgia made Paul a loveable friend, companion, and most importantly - a husband to Jacqueline.
Paul shared 37 years with his devoted wife Jacqueline. They shared many memories and special times together. They enjoyed walks on the beach with their faithful companion, Bowser, and many trips together and dreamt of a special trip together to Italy. Paul and Jacqueline raised two children, Stephanie and Paul Jr.
Ultimately, Paul's favorite role he had played was "Pop" to his granddaughters. Paul loved spending as much time as he could with Julia and Audrey who absolutely adored him. He delighted in the girls' antics, and could be found with a wide grin as he watched them play with delight. For Pop, it was coloring together, watching a movie (and sneaking them their favorite candy), or playing outside. Their visits made him so happy especially towards the end of his illness, as he would beam of pure happiness. Paul was so proud of his granddaughters, he loved them so deeply.
Paul was an active parishioner of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Paul took his faith wholeheartedly, as it brought him comfort in life and during his illness.
Left to remember his stories and treasure his life are his devoted wife Jacqueline (Carney) Hychko of Waterbury, his daughter Stephanie and her husband David Devino and their daughters, Julia & Audrey of Middlebury, and his son Paul Hychko Jr. of Waterbury. Paul will leave behind his remaining siblings, John Jr., David, Gary, Lisa & Michelle, countless family and close friends to reflect back on his life. Paul was predeceased by his mother Marie (Ferrucci) Hychko, beloved sister Therese, and brothers Louis & Michael.
With his bold, caring, and vibrant personality, it is certain each person will remember Paul in their own way, from his generosity, his stories, but many for his friendship and love. Our family wishes to thank the department of the Head and Neck Cancer Center at Smilow Cancer Hospital for their treatment, support, and overall care during his illness; especially Dr. Alex Choi. May he rest in eternal peace, knowing he touched the lives and hearts of so many.
