Richard Couture Obituary

Richard J. Couture, 60, of Simsbury, beloved husband for 24 years of Gina Ann Wheeler, passed away on Saturday, October 4, 2025, surrounded by his family at St. Francis Hosital. Born in Hartford on July 10, 1965, son of Denise (Talbot) Couture of Courcelles, Quebec, Canada and the late Raynald Couture, he was a lifelong resident of Simsbury and was a graduate of Simsbury High School, Class of 1983. While growing up, Richard excelled at all sports, but he loved playing ice hockey and baseball. He remained athletic throughout his life playing in softball leagues in the Farmington Valley, playing golf at area courses with his friends, and racing dirt bikes all over New England. He was a member of the Knox Trail Riders in Westfield, MA and participated in Hare Scramble Enduro races. In his spare time, Richard loved watching his favorite sports including UFC, motorcross, golf, baseball, and his favorite football and hockey teams, the Dallas Cowboys and the Montreal Canadians. Richard's first job was at Taylor Rental and after graduating high school, he took a position at Ensign-Bickford where his parents both worked for over 40 years. After just a few years, he learned the sheetrock and drywall trade from a family friend and Richard was hooked. He quickly grew his business, Richard J. Couture Sheetrock & Drywall, and was well known for his skill, his meticulous attention to detail, and his ability to do any job. When he wasn't working or playing sports, Richard loved spending time relaxing at home with his wife, his sons, and his friends. He loved steak and cheese grinders and eating in general and was always fun to be around. He loved making other people laugh and had a wonderful sense of humor. He always looked forward to taking trips with his wife to comedy shows at Mohegan Sun and to Cape Cod in the fall. In addition to his beloved wife, Gina Ann Wheeler and his mother, Denise Couture, he leaves two sons, Robert Walter Latonie, III and Justin R. Couture both of Simsbury; his mother-in-law, Beverly Wheeler of East Hartland; a sister-in-law, Brenda Porter and her husband Michael of North Granby; a brother-in-law, Billy Wheeler of East Hartland;and many aunts, uncles, and cousins in Canada. His family will receive friends on Saturday, October 11, 1-2 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m., at the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook St., Granby. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
