Robert Zysk Obituary

Idolized Teacher. Jujitsu Sage. The Last Renaissance Man. Master of All Trades. The Ultimate Cheerleader. Forever in Blue Jeans. Mr. Fix-It. Man of the Earth. Prince Charming. We are saddened to inform you that our beloved father, husband, friend, and confidant, Bob Zysk, was called to Heaven on May 27, 2025, at the age of 78. Bob is still very much alive in the stories, wisdom, and laughter he left behind. Robert "Bob" Zysk, known far and wide as The Last Renaissance Man, has bestowed upon us a lifetime of treasures that have helped shape the people whose lives he encountered. Robert Zysk was predeceased by his parents, John and Lorraine (Pelletier) Zysk, his in-laws Laureen and Louis Styers, numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, as well as Bobby's mother, Sharon Ann. Bob's life was a decades-long masterclass in curiosity, service, humility, and excellence. From his earliest days competing in judo matches (he co-founded the Interscholastic Judo League) to returning years later as a white belt in jujitsu alongside his young son, Bobby, and climbing all the way to a 6th-degree black belt, Bob was never satisfied with the surface; he dug deeper. He studied. He perfected. And then he shared. But for all the belts and brilliance, it was teaching - real, soul-fueled, student-centered teaching - where Bob Zysk left his most lasting legacy. He began his teaching career in 1968 at Bristol Eastern High School, part of a legendary cohort of new educators who still keep in touch decades later. Bob didn't just make colleagues - he made lifelong teammates. He was the kind of faculty member who showed up for everything: Friday night football games, faculty-student basketball showdowns, any event where spirit met school pride. He was present. He invested his time and enthusiasm in the present moment, making every event a memorable one. His students didn't just pass his class - they grew. Under his tutelage, struggling students gained the confidence to believe they could achieve anything. Bob didn't teach a classroom; he taught individuals. Every kid mattered. Every story, every struggle, every breakthrough. He wouldn't let them fail. They left his classroom with newfound resiliency. He loved learning. You could see it on his face, hear it in his voice, and catch it like a fever. His joy was contagious. He was the first to laugh (that patented snort-laugh) at a friend's joke and the last to leave a conversation. His ever-curious soul always wanted to know more, not to hoard that knowledge, but to share it. Off the clock, Bob was a social magnet - open, available, and genuinely interested in people. He was everyone's Cheerleader, the guy who showed up not only to have fun but to make sure everyone else did, too. And he was one of the rare few who didn't just participate in organized events; he rolled up his sleeves and did the work to make those events happen. Planning, organizing, coordinating - if it meant creating joy and community, Bob was the first to volunteer. Whether with his fellow Ski-zers on powder days out west, at the bowling alley, or on the tennis court, Bob brought that same energy and generosity. He was also a golfer, a mechanic, a plumber, a sensei, a philosopher - a man whose hands and mind were equally adept at fixing a leaky faucet or explaining the sociopolitical ramifications of a historical event. He won several awards for his stunning 1955 Buick Super at car shows. He fished with deft. He hunted fowl. He was always available for others to hear their stories and offer advice if asked. He was the kind of man who could fix your furnace, win a debate, land a trout, rewire a circuit, groom a prize-winning spaniel, cheer the loudest at a game, and still defer the spotlight so someone else could shine. He had gravitas - the quiet kind. The kind that made people lean in, not back. He was the smartest man in the room, yet never had to show it to others. He had a humble confidence that attracted others to his gentle spirit. Each person who had the privilege of being around Bob found themselves in a better place in life than before they met him. He will be missed, and those left behind will continue his legacy of inclusivity, kindness, humor, generosity, and compassion. In addition to several first and second cousins on both sides of the family, Bob is survived by his two children, Emi and Bobby Zysk, who are both filled with a lifetime of fond memories of their father. Emi especially remembers attending car shows, fishing and history trips, and heartfelt chats about life. Emi will miss finding that next great cookie together, walks and talks, contagious laughs on rollercoasters, "Goofy" grins on Disney trips, Bob giving Niley those sunshine back scratches, riding in the Buick on an open highway, and dancing to the Oldies. Bobby will remember the fishing trips in Old Lyme with his dad and grandfather casting the rod to catch bluefish. He is filled with gratitude because his dad showed him the beautiful side of humanity. Bob taught Bobby what true love is and the gift of listening without judgment so that people can be their true, authentic selves. There is no such thing as caring too much. Bob is survived by his wife, Judi Styers Zysk. Bob was the type of spouse who brought the other up in times of need. What mattered most to them was working together through life's challenges with love and trust for each other. Everything else was simply "Diddley Poo." He was her best friend. A partner in crime. Prince Charming to his Princess Judi. Even in death, his presence is still strong. The heart is still full of his essence, and that feeling will not subside any time soon. Love You Always and Forever!! Friends are invited to a Celebration of Life for Bob on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at Church of Christ Congregational, at 1075 Main Street in Newington, Connecticut, beginning at 2:30 PM. At the request of the family please do not wear the color black to the memorial service. Bob was too bright a light and would want people to dress in light colors. Mr. Zysk was my favorite teacher of all time. I wasn´t a huge fan of school but I always looked forward going to his class. He told the best stories. He would show us some of his Jujitsu moves. He had a unique way of teaching and getting through to his students. It was the one class I never sat and stared at the clock waiting for the bell to ring. He always had a smile on his face and would make time for you if you needed help with your studies or anything else. The obituary is phenomenal and totally tells you how truly amazing he was and how much of an impact he left on so many people. I was blessed to have him as my teacher and saddened that he is gone too soon. My condolences to his family at this difficult time.

Bob, I still cant bring myself to call him Bob, as he will always be Coach, was my friend. I will deeply miss calling him after tournaments to chat and our random phone calls to catch up. I can say with great surety I would not be who I am today without Coach, and he has helped shape my life to enable me to do things I never thought was possible. Thank you Coach, I know that I will miss you dearly until we meet again.

Mr Zysk!!! You made such a difference in my life. I´ll never forget you playing us `Landslide´ in class and letting us feel your emotion. A song that I now sing/play and means so much to me. I remember the delight of receiving the letter that I wrote to my future self, that you mailed to me, 5 years after graduation. You are a rare gem of a human and I am more myself in the world because I got to be in your presence when I did. You are so many of our favorite teacher. What a good life you´ve lived. Thank you! I hope I get to touch as many lives as you have!

Mr. Zysk was a special kind of soul. I was lucky enough to have 3 years of study under him (BEHS class of 2004). He made me feel intelligent, capable, and unique. In an environment full of "Fit-in to be cool", he made it safe to be yourself, in fact he praised you for it. I went through a very difficult time my senior year, and he was the only person, outside of my mother and grandmother, that I wanted to talk to about it, and his advice still affects me today. His curiosity was contagious, and his empathy unmatched. He was remarkable and memorable. In fact, I had just been talking about him to my boss a few days ago and couldn´t say enough about the impact he had on my life. Thank you, Mr. Zysk....... For instilling in me the idea that being "spunky" was special. YOU were special. The world lost a bright light of humanity

This obituary summarizes him perfectly. He always had a smile on his face. Mr. Zysk was my favorite teacher. Psychology ended up being my favorite course in college. Mr. Zysk was my homeroom teacher from 1988-1992. The fact that I can still remember his smile, voice and kindness more than 3 decades later speaks to the kind of man he was. He showed us such a special way to be an adult - welcoming, accepting, thoughtful, curious and funny. My condolences to his loved ones. Please know I will always remember him.

I never had Mr. Zysk as a teacher but as a tennis player I got to know him as the boys' coach who was always willing to help and share with the girls' team. He even spent time giving us specialized lessons in the summer where he would teach about tennis and life. This beautiful obituary is a testament to what he meant to everyone who got to spend even a little bit of time with him. Rest in peace, Mr. Zysk. Thank you for giving so much to all of us for so many years

Mr. Zysk was a force in so many lives. He saw what you were trying to hide away, whether it be pain or happiness, and was there to help you through it or celebrate it. He´s my inspiration for going into education and working with adolescents. I will never forget our lunches at BK where he told me to stick it out, the kids need you. The amount of lives he touched ensures his legacy will continue far behind those he immediately knew.

I only had Mr Zysk for one course-psychology/ my senior year, but he left a lasting impression on my life. I ended up pursuing child psychology as my minor in college and have always told others that my love of the inner workings of the human mind first started in his class. I still remember receiving my "letter from my past self" 10 years after I graduated high school. What a cool idea to do with his students! I also have fond memories of running into Mr Zysk at the Big E while he was showing off his car and my family was just starting out. He offered advise and shared some fond memories of his own young family Nd he always just made you feel like you were the most important person in the world while he spoke with you. Prayers to his family. The world is a little emptier without him here, but is a lot fuller because he was here.

Mr. Zysk, one of the kindest, laid back souls a high schooler could ever meet...a teacher you´d love to run into in the halls bc the man was always smiling! His kindness demanded your attention, he found a way to meet you where you were. He´s the reason I pursued psychology in college. He was bright and full of energy. Truly one of the best teachers ever. I´m honored to have been taught by such a unique- gentle soul. Rest easy Mr. Zysk

Mr. Zysk was an amazing teacher! I always looked forward to his class. I´ll never forget his kindness when I was grieving a fellow classmate. I still share the story of how he had us write letters to ourselves in 5 years. Sure enough, he sent them to us! It was so funny reading my high school self´s thoughts! He had such an impact and I´m truly saddened to hear of his passing. My condolences to his family.

Mr.Zysk wasn´t just my favorite teacher he was the my avenger. When the boys told me I couldn´t do something because I was a girl Mr. Zysk showed all the ways I could and could do it better. He taught us chivalry in a time where it was underrated and much needed. I´m honored for the time I spent with him in the classroom and the time I was able to learn from him as an adult. Thank you Mr. Zysk for helping me become the person I am. You never stopped being my biggest fan.

So sorry to hear this. Mr Zysk was an amazing teacher. I am grateful that I had him as my psychology teacher at Bristol Eastern. If it wasn´t for him I wouldn´t be in the field today. Thinking of all of you during this time.
